26. Vampires, Werewolves, Humans

Now that they knew Victoria was back, Bella had been restless all week, and it was getting on River's nerves.

Graduation couldn't come sooner for her. She kept saying it felt wrong, just sitting around, waiting for disaster to strike again, while she was still human. River couldn't be bothered hiding his annoyance anymore.

His emotions were already volatile enough, he didn't need hers rubbing off on him as well.

Edward and Alice reassured her everyday, saying everything was under control. River was worried, but not to the extent that Bella was. He felt safer, knowing both the wolves and the Cullens were after Victoria.

But the idea of the wolves and the Cullens being in the forests together...

That one was still a little hard to swallow.

Usually when he felt like this, he would go see Jacob. He did want to go see Jacob, he just didn't know how to go about any of his feelings. Or Jacob's. But maybe it would be better to just keep it locked away for now, and go see Jacob and just relax, hang out. He could figure things out later.

Obviously, with the whole Victoria situation, Edward was almost never leaving Bella's side (outside of classes) and that meant he hadn't been out hunting in a while–evident by his black eyes. It was just making things harder for him. So, after Bella asked Alice if anything was going to happen on the weekend–to which she had responded that she couldn't see anything out of the ordinary–Bella insisted that Edward go hunting with his brothers.

Alice's certainty was enough to convince Edward. So he, Jasper and Emmett all went off to go track down mountain lions and bears. Alice was also out hunting, but she was staying closer to home, since she'd be the first to see if anything changed, and could come back within 15 minutes.

That was what led to the teens' current situation. A big empty Saturday with nothing to distract themselves with. Moreso Bella, because River had to deal with her undivided restlessness.

He sighed angrily, putting down his pencil. "Will you please stop?"

Bella tore her gaze away from the forest, and back to River. Her fingers stopped tapping on her binder, which was the source of the irritating noise. "I'm just–"

"Yes, I know. Just try and relax," River said, returning his attention to his science book on the picnic blanket. They were revising for their finals. Trying to, anyway.

"I wish it was that easy," Bella mumbled. She looked up at the dark cloudy sky. "It's probably going to rain soon."

River followed her gaze. It seemed a lot brighter before, but they had been out for at least an hour. "Then I'm gonna go study inside, since you're distracting me."

She rolled her eyes. "Actually, I was thinking about seeing Jacob today. Did you wanna come?"

His earlier arguments came back to mind. It was going to happen at some point, and he really wanted to go down to La Push again. Plus, it would probably help Bella relax, and take the irritation away from River. "Sure. It'll be good to see him again." They packed up their books and the picnic blanket before heading back inside. Bella was going to Angela's this afternoon, but they still had plenty of time before that.

"Do you think Alice will stop us?" River asked as they hopped into the truck. He made sure not to forget their raincoats, in case it did rain. "No doubt she's seen us heading there already."

Bella started the truck and reversed out. "I guess we'll find out."

Including the time it took them to actually leave after making the decision to go down, Alice would have been able to show up within the next minute, but she never did, which was a little surprising. River thought Edward would have asked her to at least try and stop them, but he wasn't complaining.
