The Party

Alex sat in the corner of the dark room. He could feel the baseline from the speakers vibrate through him. All around him were masses of swaying bodies.

Dakota wiggled her hips in front of him seductively. He grew tired of her. She’d been with him for over six years, and she wasn’t willing to leave. He was almost certain the only way to free him would be to kill her. But he wasn’t ready to take that step, at least not yet.

His eyes wondered, scanning the crowd. Gabe’s long blond curls, which were held in a ponytail, distracted him first. In front of Gabe stood two girls’ seconds away from throwing punches to possess his attention. Not too far from him was Tyler, who at the moment was surrounded by dancing girls. He stood still in the middle of their bodies watching with careful calculations.

Dakota interrupted his thought process with a kiss on the cheek, “Babe, I’m gonna go to the bathroom, okay,” she squeaked in his general direction. Once she was gone, he noticed a blonde staring at him and waved her over. Her face lit up immediately as she stumbled in his direction. “Name’s Alex,” he said loud enough for her to hear over the fist pumping music.

“Really, me too,” she squealed with excitement, “but call me Lexi”.

“Wanna dance,” he asked completely ignoring the fact that Dakota would return, probably pissed. She answered by grabbing his wrist and pulling him to the dance floor.

They danced for a total of two songs, before Lexi wanted a break. He followed her closely behind, eyes on Gabe, who at the moment had both girls down to their underwear in a slightly secluded corner of the room. She stopped in front of the couch waiting for Alex to sit, and then straddling his lap.

“Alex,” she purred, “where are you from? You don’t sound native.”

Small Talk. Alex didn’t understand why he couldn’t just find a girl to have fun with. She had to know everything about him. Girls were way too suspicious, for his liking. Not that he had another option. “Originally, England,” he answered.

“Really? What’s it like? How long ago was that? Can we go one day,” Lexi asked ecstatically.

Too many questions. Questions he could deal with but commitments. Not his thing. “Go get me a drink,” he said dodging all of her questions. Once she was out of sight, he moved from the couch knowing she’d never find him again.

After some wondering, Alex finally settled in the corner furthest from where he started. He felts eyes on his skin. There was power under that gaze. He looked up expecting to see a familiar face; instead he was greeted with a pair of olive eyes, unlike anything he’d ever seen before. The eyes were attached to a girl with caramel skin and long black hair, hair that didn’t stop before her hips. Her eyes were clearly her best attribute, or at least the most intriguing. Her dark hair was half up and half down. She wore a bang straight across her face covering her eyebrows.

The more he stared at her the more power he felt radiating from her. It tingled along his skin, leaving goose bumps in its trail. What are you? The longer he felt her the more he needed to know. The more he needed to harness her power he had to have it.

“Baby, where’d you go,” he was snapped out of his trance as Dakota wrapped her arms around his neck.

“Away,” he said pushing her arms off of him. He needed to get out of this room. Her power was suffocating him.

“Wait,” Dakota screamed as Alex pushed his way through the crowd and out into the cool open air of Black Falls, Minnesota.
