Most mentally ill people aren't violent. Repeat that one, kids: Most. Mentally. Ill. People. Aren't. Fucking. Violent.
Those of us who are violent, it isn't because our mental illness magically erased all our morals and ability to feel empathy. We're violent because we feel a strong underlying delusion, compulsion, and/or lack of self-control. And a lot of the time, even those of us who do get such compulsions, don't actually act on these them.
And trauma, here's one: Mentally ill people do not just snap into a bout of long-term psychosis after a single traumatic event.
Traumatic events can worsen pre-existing mental illnesses. That much is true. But we don't just become raging murderous lunatics or empty shells afterwards. By writing something like this, you are saying we are weak. You are saying we can't cope, even if we've being doing so most our lives.
Also on that note, temporary bouts of psychosis can sometimes occur in people who happen to be otherwise mentally healthy after traumatic or massively stressful events. However, an otherwise mentally healthy person who is exposed to a single episode of stress or trauma isn't going to suddenly develop a mental disorder from it.
