"Beyond the door, there's peace I'm sure.
And I know there will be no more tears in heaven."

Dan stared at the pill bottle, willing himself to poor out just a little bit more than necessary. Isn't it strange that someone could use something that was meant to help with depression to do exactly what they were meant to prevent? He was almost there, just a few more pills to swallow then he would close his eyes and finally be free from all of the pain.

"Dan... What are you doing?" Dan spun around, the bottle falling from his trembling hands to the ground, all of the pills spilling out of it onto the carpet of his room. Emma, Dan's younger sister, was standing just inside of his room, staring at him with furrowed eyes. Though Emma was a lot younger than Dan, he knew that she understood what was going on a whole lot better than his parents did.

"None of your business! Get out of my room!" Dan shouted, slamming the door as soon as she stepped out.

Dan sighed and began cleaning up all of the pills that had fallen from the bottle. Now that Emma had caught him in the act of finally relieving himself of all the pain, she was probably going to tell his parents. Which meant that right now was not the time to finally do it.

Just as Dan had predicted, his mum tore open the door and stomped into his room right as Dan put away the pill bottle and sat back down on his bed. He looked up at her with a confused look--which was completely fake, mind you, he knew exactly why she looked so terrified.

His mum let out a small breath of relief, staring at him for a second before sitting on the edge of his bed. "Sweet heart, where is your pill bottle?" she asked, sounding slightly out of breath as if she had been running.

"Why do you want to know?" Dan questioned, nervously playing with his fingers in his lap. He tried his hardest not to glance at his nightstand where he had hidden it.

She looked at him with a look that said, 'you and I both know why I want to know.'

Dan rolled his eyes and pulled the bottle out of his nightstand, handing it over to his mum. "I'm going to put these away, I'll give you the pills you need when you are meant to take them, alright?" she told him seriously.

Gritting his teeth, Dan nodded and tried to keep himself from completely breaking down. He'd have to find another way to make everything stop.

They sat in an awkward silence for a while, both trying to think of something to say to break the tension. "I'm going to be meeting my friend tomorrow for lunch. She has a son a few years older than you, I was thinking that you could come with me and hang out at their house for a bit. How does that sound?"

"You're setting me up on a play date? I'm twenty years old, mum, just because I'm living here and being treated like I'm five years old doesn't actually make me that age." Dan snapped.

"I know it's hard, sweet heart. I really do understand-"

"No, you don't understand. You pretend like you do, so does dad, but you don't get it!"

"Hey, listen, I may not understand exactly what you're going through but I still want to make it better. And who knows, maybe making a new friend and ditching all of those other kids who you pretend to fit in with will actually help you."
