My eyes fluttered, I went to rube them with my hand. I couldn't move. My hands are weighed down, but with what? My eyes blinked open. Bright lights shone in my face. Where am I? The lights started to dimme and figures began to appear. Baby Jones, Maisy, David.... and Jasper. Good not a dream!
"What happened?" David asked me.
"I was in the cafe again."
"English, Bobby." Maisy intrurupted looking at the confusion on Jasper's face.
"Oh, right. Tearoom. But it was a memory just after...you now." I pause and thought of the pain we went through, I winked in the direction of Jasper to make him think of the conversation we had earlier. "It was with the story of 'A Billy Goat's Gruff'. Davy was telling the story."
"No. I meant before you blackout. 'Been out for ages." David decided it was best to leave the story for another day.
"I was thinking of the fire, and saving Charlot." I said quietly nearly a whisper that I couldn't hear. I touched my burns running down my face a pictured the rest running down to my leg. Picturing them bleeding. David walked out the room with Jasper and, from what I could make out, was telling him our history.
My burns are normally covered by my hair and hat, so they are not seen, even if you are standing next to me.
Then I saw the Inspector standing outside the door. Is he coming in?
"Are you alright? You were in the station when you passed out."
"Yes thank you. Just the old injury, I did mention it in the letter." I had to lie to keep the job.
Just as the Inspector was about to answer me a Doctor walked in with Jasper and David trailing behind. Jasper and David almost race to my left side to hold my hand. Maisy got there first.
"Hello Miss Luckett. Are you feeling better?" I nod not wanting to interrupt the flow of the doctor's words. "Glad to hear it. After you passing out, again, you weakened your right ear. But I believe I have something that will help you get around." The doctor continued, not acknowledging Maisy's interruption. It is just me and the doctor. "A dog, I had a little conversation earlier. I have her here now if you want to meet her." I had no time to answer before the Doctor peices his lips together and whistled. The door flung open and a young Golden Retriever entered.
"Beautiful, is she not?"
"She most certainly is." Jesper said for me, I think anyway. He understoud my condition, and was looked into my eyes, he seemed to be thinking about me.
The dog came running to my side, jumped onto the bed and stuck her head under my covers. I petted her to say 'Hello' she went mad. First she jumped off the bed. Then ran circles around the room before coming to a hult at the Doctor's feet.
"Why would I need her?" I was quite confused by the Doctor giving me a dog so I queried it.
"In... you... um..." The Doctor didn't want to continue. "When.... you.. fell... you made yourself a... little deaf in the right ear." He started again but was slow and quite. I just made out what he was saying and reacted.
"Please don't cry." Jasper said looking at my bottom lip, I felt it tremble.
A pearl of water gathered at the corner of my eye, it rolled down my face and got court by the bed sheets. I pulled the sheets higher so they were covering my shoulders and brought my knees up to my chest. I tilted my head down to stop the tears from being seen. I felt a large hand on my back, it was there for the purpose of comfort however I jumped at its touch, and my tears were seen tearing down my face.
"Look, miss, I have had a conversation with the other doctors and they've said that if you take it easy we can dismiss you tomorrow." The doctor saw the destress in my eyes let alown my face. I nodded drying my eyes. "Get some rest. We'll see you in the morning. Oh... and forgot to say, the dog's name is Mandy."
The doctor left the room with everyone following, saying their "good bye's" and "see you tomorrow's". That was how I got to thinking about the girl in the street, Davey and the Tearooms, my new life.
