The second day of school was barely as fun as the first. Math was long and grueling with "start of the year fun" and no learning. A high schooler was passing out audition forms for Romeo an Juliet at lunch. I grab one and smile. "Thanks!"
My ashy gray converse race through the halls as my mostly curly dark red hair bounces behind me. I feel my notebooks hit my back with every long stride. I'm not supposed to be running but the next class, poetry, was my favorite. I loved poetry and got to take a forty minute class on it every day. Even better- I sat next to Artemis. And Mr. Andre was nice.
I hopped into my seat at the back table and hung my plaid backpack on my chair. Mr. Andre began the lesson, diving into types of figurative speech including Simile and metaphor and even handed out a partner worksheet. "Partners?" Artemis says as he gets her sheet. "Totally." I reply, just as Mr. Andre announces that "you will partner with the person sitting across from you." I groan and turn to see the blonde kid Riley from Math. "Hey." I mumble, not wanting him to see my shirt which said WHERE DID I PARK THE TARDIS? on it. "Hey, I don't bite you know. Don't have to act all silly. Oh! I like Doctor Who too!" Riley raises his hand for a high five. I roll my eyes and force back a smile. So he is pretty nice.
As we work on the sheet I glance at Artemis, who is busy talking with her partner Hayden. I realize how weird it was being in sixth grade. Things were gonna be different. There was gonna be dating and older kids and all sorts of growing up stuff. I personally was a little scared me and Arty could drift apart.
"You're trying out for the play? Oh my gosh. We have a lot in common." Riley said enthusiastically. "Awesome! I'll see you at auditions!" I smirk while finishing the last question on the worksheet. Riley smiles. His blue eyes twinkle with a fun sort of mischief.
Being a nerd about school I turn in the worksheet to avoid his gaze.
I sit down again as Mr. Andre begins to grade our sheet. The young teacher catches our eye and gives us a thumbs up. "So you're pretty good at school. Why don't you talk a lot In math?" I shrug. "I thought you or Ronnie might not like me."
He blinks and stars laughing. I blush and defend. "Well what?" I say. "You're so honest. I usually just say I dunno and stuff."
"I'm a Sagittarius. We're pretty honest. What sign are you?"
"What's later September?"
"Oh! You're a libra. Linda's are shy. I never would have thought that of you." Flipping my hair over my shoulder. "Hey Annelise, what lunch you got?" He says casually. "First." I reply, blinking my topaz eyes. "Me too." He nods. I look down at my feet. My sparkly loose turquoise leggings flash with heir glitter. Every time I put my hand on my leg, glitter follows with it when I raise it. The bell rings and I grab my backpack without looking back.
