Poetry. I plop down in my seat and hang my backpack and the teacher
Mr. Andre begins the lessons and hands out partner work. "Partners?" I ask, turning to face Annelise. "Totally." She replies. I'm terrible at poetry.
"You will partner with the person across from you." Mr. Andre announces, and I turn to face my new partner. Hayden.
I've decided that he's ok, but obviously I'd rather work with Annelise.
"Hey." I say, looking down at the work sheet. "Hey. We're in the same math class right?" "Yeah." I answer.
"What's your name again?" Hayden asks, as I write my name down on the top of the paper. "Artemis." I say, tapping where I wrote my name.
"Ok." We continued to talk and work and ask each other short questions, like: 'favorite color?' Or
'Best movie?' Basic stuff.
"Pets?" Hayden asks, writing down an answer. "Yeah. I have a gray tabby cat and a three month old
German shepherd puppy." I say. "Really? German shepherds are those big police dogs right?" "Uh-huh."
"How'd you get one of those?" He questions, furrowing his brow.
"My uncle's a cop. His dog had babies and he gave one to me." I say, drumming my nails softly on the desk. "What about the rest?" "They're for the police department." I answer. "How about you?" "I have a dog. He's a mutt." I smile. "Sports?" Hayden asks as he scribbles down an answer. "Yeah." I respond.
"Which ones?" "Gymnastics, dance, circus- if that even counts as a sport."
I answer, dropping my pencil to crack my knuckles. "Circus? Like, with clowns and those pyro's who swallow fire?" I roll my eyes. "No. The stuff I do has characters and a plot. And it's more... Aerial. And there aren't clowns. Or tigers. Definitely no pyros." I hope. I laugh softly as I finish the last question and stand up to hand our work in. I hand it to Mr. Andre  and slide back into my seat. "How about you? Do you do sports?" I ask Hayden, running my hand through my hair.
"I play hockey and baseball." He says.
"Nice." I glance at the clock on the wall. One minute until class is over. I start drumming my nails again and
Mr. Andre wishes us all a good day. The bell rings and I grab my backpack and swing it over my shoulder. I smile at Hayden and speed walk to catch up with Annelise.
