Sam's POV

I entered full panic mode when the nurse showed up without the doctor or Dean.
"Where is my brother? Is he okay?" I could tell I was raising my voice, causing a scene. But I was scared. Terrified.
"He made it, sir. He will be okay." These were the most relieving words I had ever heard in my whole life.
"Can I see him?"
"Let the doc finish getting him situated and run a few tests first. It won't take long, besides, we need to discuss some things."
"What kind of things?" I wanted to go see Dean, but I understood.
"For starters, your name and your brother's."
"He is Dean Winchester and I am Sam."
"Okay. How old is Dean? And why would he do something like this?" She had a pencil and a clipboard and was taking notes. I knew why Dean did this. He hadn't been right for a while, not since dad died. And then it was made worse when he lost Jo.
"He's twenty six." I paused. I didn't want to talk to a stranger about Dean's problems. "He's been pretty bad since our dad died. He was killed saving Dean, and I don't think Dean ever stopped blaming himself for that. And then just last month his girlfriend died, and next I knew, he was shut up all day and only came out when we had to work. I wish I could say this came as a surprise, but...." I let my voice trail off, in truth, I wasn't surprised at all. I was disappointed, devastated, but not surprised.
"What you boys do? Do you work as partners?" That was a funny question for her to ask. I couldn't tell her about the family business. That would get me locked up in the crazy house, and I needed to be here for Dean.
"We do work together. We do traveling trade. A little here, a little there. We don't really have roots."
"Has the business been going well for you two lately?"
"Not really, we've been hunting for a vampire-" I caught myself. We had been hunting a vampire nest, but I couldn't tell her that. "-inspired necklace. It's rare, and we were offered lumps of cash if we found it. No luck, yet." Right then the doctor walked out of a room on the opposite wall of the OR.
"Give me one moment, Mr. Winchester." Nurse Bradbury went up to talk to the doctor. I couldn't hear what they were saying, but after a moment the nurse headed into the room and the doctor walked over to me.

Dean's POV

I woke up as the doctor was getting ready to leave. I could see now. I jerked my hand to take out the IV, but it was stopped by a chain. I was cuffed. The doctor turned around and looked at me.
"Let me out!" I screamed. I had to go find Sammie. The doctor didn't react at all to my screaming. He started going ton about how the operation was successful and I was going to be okay. He asked my name.
"Dean Winchester. My brother, Sam, where is he?" The doctor just stared at me for a long time. "Hello! My brother?" I was almost as if he couldn't hear me. That was impossible. I was screaming.
"I'll send your brother in here."
"Yes, you do that. I need to see Sammie." The doctor left. Now I was able to process him and everything that had happened. He was cute. I felt gay thinking it, but it was true. He had sparkling blue eyes. His hair was messy, in a good way though. His features were perfectly placed and... there were no words. He was beautiful. But I was tired. So I brushed the doc to the side and went back to sleep.

Chapter 3

Cas's POV

"Hello, Mr. Winchester." I really didn't want to tell his man that his brother may never speak again, but I had to.
"Please, Sam." He reached out and shook my hand. "How is Dean?"
"He will be okay, however, there is one problem." I could see the look of sheer terror cross the boy's face when I said these words.
"What happened?"
"Well, you know that he lost a lot of blood before we even got him into the operating room, much less on the table and hooked up. When I went in to speak to him a moment ago, I realized that this blood loss may have affected him in a negative way. I tried to speak to him, but all he did was stare."
"Maybe he just doesn't like you." Sam seemed relieved hearing this, like maybe Dean ignored people often.
"That is a possibility, but there have also been cases where people lose so much blood that they end up losing control of their muscles and other parts of the system that aid in speech. We know he will talk to you, if he can, so after you go in we will know for sure. "
"And what if it is what you think it is? How can that be fixed?"
"It can't be. Sometimes it is temporary, other times permanent. However, it is vital that you do not bring this up with Dean. He will think he is speaking to you, maybe even yelling. In his mind he IS doing these things. If you tell him what is going on, he may panic inside of himself, which could end badly."
"How do I know what he is trying to say to me? If he can't talk, that is."
"You don't. We just have to play it as it goes."
"Well, let's see how it goes." Sam stood up, and we walked to the room that Dean was in.

Sam's POV

I couldn't believe what I was being told. Dean couldn't talk? It was more like he wouldn't. But then again, there was no way for me to know until I tried to talk to him. And if this was what the doctor was saying it was, I had to tread lightly. And it didn't help that I had no way to communicate with him. I could be saying one thing while he is screaming about something else in his head. He would definitely know something was up. So really, there was no way to hide it from him, short of staying away, and I was not going to do that. From the doctor's tone, it seemed like that was exactly what he wanted me to do. Oh, well. I will listen to him a little bit, I won't talk to Dean, but he can't stop me from seeing my brother.
From what the doctor told me, this could last forever. Dean may never talk again. How will he handle that?

Dean's POV

The nurse walked in a little bit after the doctor went out, waking me up from my short little nap. I glanced over at her.
"Well, hello there." It was one thing to avoid hitting on the male doctor, but the nurse, well...

She walked up to the bed with a glass of water. Considering I was cuffed to the bed, I let her help me drink it. She had orangish- red hair and beautiful eyes.
"You gonna tell me hi?"
"I already did." She just stared at me.

"Well then." She walked around the room, gathering up stuff that the doctor had left lying around messily. I proceeded to let my eyes wander up and down her body. "Are you checking me out?"
"PSH! Me? Never." She smiled
"You are a little out of my league." I raised my eyebrows.
"Good thing the doctor is cuter than you, then." I expected a reaction from her, anything. She didn't even turn around to look at me. She wasn't interested. But the doc, maybe, very very hopefully.
