~Your POV~

The last week of summer. Everything that happened this summer; the difficulties, the long, hard working days... All of it led up to this Saturday evening.

Alex's final rodeo before school started again.

The past competitions mean nothing when it comes down to today, regardless if he lost or won. Only the work and training you put in together does.

You, Alex and Murphy put in countless hours these past few weeks. Working out any flaws in their routine as much as humanly possible.

Even now, the morning of the competition, just as the sun was starting to rise, you were outside in jeans and a black and white striped tank top. A stopwatch in hand, eyes trained on your boyfriend as he raced through the dirt on his horse.

Just as they reach the final stretch, attempting a spin, Murphy's hind leg seemingly buckles and takes a near fall. You toss your head back, groaning.

Once Murphy is standing straight, Alex clicks his tongue, guiding him up to the fence where you are standing. He lets loose a deep sigh.

"That docks two points. What's the score?"

Your eyes linger on the paused time before looking back up at Alex.

"It's your new best even with-"

"What is it?" Alex interrupts before you can continue.

"You really don't need to psych yourself out over this, babe." You speak before holding the device up for him to see.

His eyes loom over the time before turning away to gaze at the sun as it peaks over the horizon.

"That doesn't even compare to the guys I'm going up against tonight."

"Some of those guys are half your age and more experienced." You remind him, climbing up the metal fence and sitting down. "Cut yourself some slack."

"I can't do that if I want to win."

Murphy scuffs a hoof at the dirt, impatient as they remain stationary.

You examine Alex. A slight breeze rustles through his messy hair. His expression is taut, evident he is deep in thought.

He soon shifts to look at you, eyes softening.

"I'm sorry," he murmurs, "I just... I feel like, if I don't win this today, all of this summer will have been for nothing. Like I'll have wasted your time."

A smirk creeps across your lips as you watch him before reaching out, brushing your hand along Murphy's jaw.

"Alex, after everything we've been through this summer... win or lose, I'll still love you."

His throat bobs, eyes meeting yours. There's a short lived silence between you before he leans towards you.

Closing the distance, you hold onto the fence, meeting him halfway and exchange a gentle kiss.

"You're the best." He murmurs into the kiss, making you giggle.

"I know." You tease.

~~~~~
You can only imagine Alex's nerves. You yourself have knots tightening in your stomach and anxiety settling in the center of your chest.
The drive was roughly two hours, so getting out of the truck and stretching your legs feels incredible.
Cole hops out of the passenger seat, stretching his arms up above his head.
"Thank God this is the last competition!" He states with a wide smile.
