Chapter 4- Kitty & Theeny
Sunlight fills the room.
"Huh?" You look around, confused. Sun barely ever reaches your room back home.
That's when it hits you. You're not "Back Home". You're in Positive Sector 5. With Heather, Samikah, and Petra.
You groan and reach over to the bedside table, rolling to the edge of the bed. Then, the bedding and comforters slip off the mattress and you tumble to the floor in a heap.
"Have you never gotten out of a bed before? Loser." Samikah pops her head in the room, laughing.
It's like she's not from 5 at all.
You roll your eyes, knowing that eventually, you'll get to see her die.
"BREAKFAST!" Someone shouts.
You scurry out of the room, not minding that you're in PJs, and into the kitchen. There, you see Heather, with her blonde hair in a high pony, looking down at a book. Petra is holding something, and throwing them at the walls and- OH CRAP SHE'S THROWING KITCHEN KNIVES! Meanwhile, Samikah is standing by, laughing.
They're insane.
You sit yourself down next to Heather at the island, overlooking the common room.
"Hey." You say nonchalantly.
Heather looks up, and then says, "Oh good, you're here. Would you rather eat here or go to the dining hall?"
"Can we go to the dining hall? I want to meet some other Runners." You reply, just wanting to see Feyth.
"Petra, we don't want your breakfast, we're heading to the dining hall. Bye!" Heather gets up and walks to the front of the cabin, kicking on her shoes and rushes out the door before another word can come out of Petra's mouth.
You follow her, eyeing Samikah as she glares at you. Outside, the sun is shining over the mountains, and in the distance, you can see the roofs of another training village.
"What do you want to eat?" Heather asks you.
"Oh, I don't know, maybe some cereal?" You respond.
"Ew, so boring," Heather teases.
You look at her with playful annoyance. "Well, what do you expect me to want?"
"Well, out of all the things you can choose, why cereal? It's just... cereal."
"Because..."
"That's not a valid answer. When you run out of weapons, or are starving to death, and I ask you why, you're just going to say 'Because'? You're starving because you feel like it?"
"Hey! You didn't even let me finish what I was saying." You grin, continuing, "I was going to say... Because I've never had it."
"You've got to be kidding me! You've never eaten cereal your entire life?! Then what did you eat back home? Bread and butter?"
"Basically." You shrug as the two of you reach the dining hall.
The glass door slides open and you gasp. You've never seen such technology at home. Nor anything as amazing as the dining hall.
The first thing that you see when you walk in is the high vaulted ceilings. The roof seems to be made mostly of glass, and when the sun shines through, it changes from clear to blue to purple to red. Along two of the walls are floor to ceiling windows, with two person tables lined next to them, almost every seat filled. In the center of the room, couches were set up in a square around a small coffee table. Straight ahead is a snack and breakfast bar, where you see some people lining up. To your right is a set of stairs. You follow Heather up the stairs, it leads to a whole new level of food.
Ahead you see a fruit and salad bar. Uninterested in eating healthy, you look to the right; there is a main course area, you walk up to it to see breakfast potatoes, sausage links, chocolate chip pancakes and syrup. Walking with the counter, you turn a corner to see a huge area with a cereal bar and toaster. Next to the toaster is a bar of bagels and bread. You grab a plate and stick a piece of bread in the toaster. A few seconds later a crispy piece of toast hops out onto the counter. Beside that are bowls of spreads, you pick up the butter knife and spread it across your warm bread. When you turn around you almost bump into Heather.
"That's all you're getting?" She asks.
"Yeah, I kind of want to see what they have for today..."
"Okay," She walks away, "I'll meet you on the balcony!"
You turn back around and see the yogurt bar. Yogurt is not what you want, so you turn away, to the omelet bar. People line up in front of the chefs, giving them detailed orders. You slip by and turn the corner, there, a counter full of pastries catches your eye. Picking up a blueberry scone, you place it on your plate and walk straight where the balcony is. The glass door is closed and you peer outside to see Heather looking out to the distance. Heather turns around and you laugh to yourself before pulling open the door.
She smiles at you and passes you a glass of iced tea, "Here, I got this for you. I hope you know what it is."
"You really think I don't know what apple juice is?" You say, laughing.
"Don't play jokes on me, I know you know it's iced tea." Heather smiles along.
"Haha, you got me." You say, mortified. Back home, you couldn't afford iced tea... to be exact, you didn't know it existed.
"Sit down, we have training later, so I think you should have more than just a slice of bread." Heather laughs, winking at you.
Obeying her, you sit down at the table with Heather, overlooking the village that we be your home for the next couple of years- well, more than a couple.
"Okay, so let's get talking. What can you do? Like, survival or weapons wise." Heather stares at you.
"Uh..." You say, "I can climb... and swim... and sort of know how to identify certain plants..."
"That's all? Really?" Heather asks, obviously not believing it.
"I've never been exposed to weapons! Oh, but my mom makes me help with dinner sometimes, so I've handled kitchen knives... But that's just about it." You protest.
"Good. At least there's something that you can do... And the fact that you've never been exposed to weapons... Well, that's all going to change." Heather smiles deviously.
Yeah... That's all going to change.
