Lisa sat beside her phone speaking to a soft voice. The man on the other line was polite but distant. She listened to him tell her about how he had gotten married for the fourth time. Jackie, his wife's name was Jackie now. Lisa was happy for him. She loved him, and now he was happy. That's all she wanted for him... Happiness.
One of Lisa's friends was sitting on her love seat waiting for Lisa to get off the phone. Lisa said her goodbyes and hung up the phone softly. She felt numb. It was weird. She should at least feel something. Lisa walked over to the love seat and sat down.
"Who was that?" Her friend asked.
"An old friend of mine..." Lisa managed to say.
Lisa's friend could tell something was wrong. It was written all over Lisa's face. "What's wrong?" Her friend asked.
"I don't want to talk about it, Ellie," Lisa said rubbing her eyes. Lisa just felt so drained and so tired.
Ellie stared at Lisa. "Who's Gene?" Ellie asked. She had heard the name repeated a few times on the phone and was curious who Gene could be.
Lisa shook her head. "A friend," She said.
"Do I know him?" Ellie asked.
"No..." Lisa said.
"Oh."
Lisa leaned her head on the back of the chair. She felt her face heating up and tears forming in her eyes. Ellie didn't know what to do to help Lisa. Ellie began to stroke Lisa's back to calm her down. The phone began to ring again, but Lisa didn't want to answer it so Ellie answered.
"Hello?"
"Lisa?" A soft voice said on the other line.
"No, this is her friend, Ellie Brooke, she... Um... Can't come to the phone," Ellie said.
"Oh, can you tell her I'm sorry," The soft voice said.
"Who do I tell is sorry?" Ellie asked.
"Gene."
"Gene who?" Ellie insisted.
"She'll know who..."
"Alright," Ellie said, she put her hand on the phone. "Gene says he's sorry."
Lisa looked over at Ellie. Lisa wiped her eyes, stood up, and held her hand out for the phone. Ellie handed the phone to Lisa.
"You son of a bitch..." Lisa growled suddenly feeling very angry.
"Lisa, I'm sorry," Gene said. "Are you angry with me because of Jackie?"
"I don't care about her! What I'm angry about is that you strung me along for all this time. Every time I saw you, you'd say how pretty I am. You even said you loved me, but that doesn't seem to matter now! You're married again, and I'm still waiting..." Lisa shouted into the receiver.
"Lisa... I get the same feeling that I got around you with Jackie..." Gene said. "I love her too."
Lisa gritted her teeth and got ready to slam the phone down.
"Lisa, I really do love you."
That took Lisa aback for a moment. She loosened her grip on the phone. Gene's voice was so soft over the phone. He had a soothing voice.
"Can we just be friends? I don't want to lose you, but I love Jackie a lot... You both mean a lot to me," Gene said.
Lisa sighed. She didn't know what to say to him. She loved him, and she could tell he loved Jackie and felt that Jackie loved him too.
"Lisa?"
"I'm sorry..."
"What?"
"I said I'm sorry. I'm sorry I yelled at you," Lisa said.
"I'm sorry for being an idiot," Gene said.
"We can still be friends," Lisa said.
She could almost hear Gene's smiling. "I'm glad," He said. "Jackie's wants me to get off the phone... I'll call you whenever I get the chance."
Lisa felt her heartache. "Bye..." She said quietly.
Ellie had been listening the whole time. Lisa hung up the phone slowly. Ellie could tell that Lisa was hurting. Lisa decided that she needed to tell someone.
"Can you keep a secret?" Lisa asked.
Ellie nodded.
"That was Gene Vincent," Lisa said.
Ellie's brow furrowed. "The guy that sang Be-Bop-A-Lula?" She asked.
Lisa nodded. "I met him in 1957 after I went to one his concerts," She said.
Ellie stared. "I don't get it. Why was he calling you?" She asked.
"He and I got really close over time," Lisa said.
Ellie frowned. "How close?" She asked suspiciously.
"I've had sex with him," Lisa said after a few moments of hesitation.
Ellie's mouth hung open. She closed her mouth.
"And I'm in love with him..." Lisa said.
Ellie didn't know what to say.
"He just got remarried," Lisa said, "and I'm still in love with him."
Ellie still didn't know what to say. She just stared at Lisa.
"I'm an idiot because I still love him..." Lisa said slowly.(Well, this is the shortest chapter of this Fanfiction yet. The song attached at the top is Race With the Devil. The story behind this song is that Capitol had a bunch of session musicians all lined up to play incase the Blue Caps weren't good enough, but Cliff Gallup played the intro to the song and the session musicians just sat down and watched the Blue Caps rock. The Stray Cats do an awesome cover of it. Whelp, until next chapter!)
