The forked path yawned open before the Godsworn, two trails stretching into the unknown like the open jaws of some unseen beast. Their torches flickered weakly, the darkness beyond swallowing all signs of direction.

Alexander stood at the front, frowning. "The trail ends here."

"Or splits," Thalor muttered, eyeing the identical tunnels. "Which is worse."

Selene spun her staff slowly in her hand, eyes narrowing. "If this is another puzzle, I'm not in the mood."

Aeris knelt, brushing her fingers over the stone. Even the earth offered her no answers here. "It's like the ground is silent," she whispered. "Dead silent."

Darian's gaze shifted toward Luna, who stood at the back, silent and still. She had barely spoken since the Mirror of Veiled Truth — the strange mirror that had shown them all their reflections, all except her.

"Luna?" he called, his voice cutting through the cold stillness.

She blinked, slow and deliberate. "I... don't know. Both paths seem the same."

Alexander glanced at her, brow furrowing. The tension wrapped tighter around them, but with no other option, the group picked the left path.

As they moved deeper, the air shifted, thickening, until even breathing felt like dragging weight through water. Faint whispers curled through the air like smoke, brushing past their ears, so soft they could almost dismiss them.

Almost.

The voices came in fragments. Names. Accusations.

Alexander's steps slowed when he heard a voice he knew — his own father's. "You were never strong enough, boy. You failed them all."

Selene flinched as another voice whispered, silky and cruel: "Your beauty is all you have. Strip it away, and who will ever look at you again?"

Aeris heard the earth itself seem to murmur: "Demeter's blessing is wasted on you."

Thalor gritted his teeth against the echo of drowned voices: "You could have saved us."

And Darian's heart sank as the softest voice of all crept into his mind — Luna's voice. "You'll never be fast enough to save anyone."

But when he looked beside him, Luna walked on, unfazed. As if she heard nothing.

The realization settled heavy in his chest.

The trail led them to the edge of an abyss, spanned by an ancient, crumbling stone bridge. The Echoing Abyss stretched below, an endless sea of black, the whispers now rising in strength.

Selene stepped close to the edge, peering down. "Lovely. Bottomless pit. My favorite."

Alexander scanned the crumbling stones. "Stay sharp. Whatever this place is, it's more than a hole."
