Chains of Heaven

The sky above the camp twisted.

It didn't darken—not yet. But it shimmered with the arrival of something that did not belong to this world. The clouds bent unnaturally as if they feared what now walked beneath them.

Sera stood still beside Asmodeus.

He could feel it in her. Power humming just beneath her skin. Unstable. Expanding. Wanting out.

But the one approaching wasn't here for her.

Not yet.

Zerachiel landed in silence.

The ground beneath him cracked but didn't shake. His boots crushed grass and ash as if no difference existed between the two. He strode into the remnants of the camp like a hammer carried by wind.

The Devotees had cleared the area. Not by order. But by instinct.

They could feel what was coming.

Zerachiel raised one hand, and six rings of golden script spiraled around his wrist. They hovered, humming.

"Ascendant-Red," he said coldly, eyes on Sera. "By the authority of the Throne, you are to be contained."

Asmodeus stepped forward. "You won't touch her."

Zerachiel did not blink. He simply opened his palm.

The chains came from above.

Forged in the Vaults of Radiance—the same shackles that bound Lilith to her prison—they descended like serpents of light. Each link etched with divine syllables, each loop crafted to bind more than flesh.

Sera tried to move.

She didn't scream.

She just gritted her teeth.

But the chains wrapped her arms, her torso, her legs. They didn't crush her.

They silenced her.

Her glow flickered. Her rabbit dropped to the dirt.

Asmodeus roared.

He moved faster than thought. One instant standing, the next in midair, shadow-wreathed fist flying straight for Zerachiel's head.

Zerachiel caught it.

With one hand.

The impact cracked the earth beneath them.

Asmodeus dropped low, sweeping Zerachiel's legs. The archangel jumped—hovered—then brought his knee down in a thunderous arc.

Asmodeus dodged, skidding backward. Flames coiled around his hands.

Zerachiel smiled.

"Still hiding behind borrowed power?"

"I'll bury you with it."

They collided.

Dark and light. Wrath and order.

Zerachiel wielded discipline like a weapon—every movement calculated. His strikes flowed like scripture, blessed and bladed. His wings sliced the air like sabers.

Asmodeus fought like fire breaking free from stone. Wild. Relentless. Each blow heavier than the last. Each dodge sharper.

But he was slowing.

Zerachiel noticed.

"You're still broken," he sneered.

Asmodeus spat blood. "I've had worse mornings."

The archangel slammed both fists into the ground. Golden chains burst upward from the soil, trying to wrap Asmodeus from below.

He backflipped away, tearing one from his ankle, but a second caught his wrist.
