Fallen Flame

He woke to fire.

The scent hit him first—Fluid vapor, scorched bone, melted stone. Smoke clung to the back of his throat like a curse. He groaned, rolling onto his side as ash crumbled beneath him. His body screamed with each twitch, nerves blistered from divine backlash.

The last thing he remembered was light. Chains. Sera's voice.

Then nothing.

Now—

Hell.

The camp was a ruin. Flames danced over shattered tents and scorched towers. The eastern wall had collapsed entirely, smoke pouring into the night sky like a funeral pyre.

Around him, chaos.

Devotees scrambled through the debris, gathering shattered Fluid canisters and half-burned crates. Their silver-glowing eyes flickered with desperation. Priests shouted commands over the crackle of flames, their robes singed, their hands trembling as they tried to draw new runes into the dirt.

In the center of it all, still bound in divine chains, sat Sera.

She hadn't moved.

Her rabbit lay beside her, untouched by flame.

Three priests circled her now, muttering over glowing scrolls. One reached out, hands trembling with power. "Ascendant-Red, do not resist."

She didn't speak.

But Asmodeus rose.

His legs nearly gave. The divine seal had scorched him deeper than blade or fire. His left side was numb, his vision still blurred. He looked at his hands—shaking, burnt, one finger twisted wrong.

And still, he moved.

One step.

Another.

The nearest priest turned. Eyes widened.

"He's still alive!"

Asmodeus didn't bother with words.

He let the shadows speak.

They lashed outward in a jagged arc, impaling the priest mid-sentence. The man's scream was swallowed in black smoke.

The other two stumbled back. One raised a seal. The other summoned flame.

Asmodeus raised his arm.

Too slow.

The fire struck his shoulder, driving him to one knee. He gritted his teeth as another seal flared, freezing the air around him.

They were coordinated.

Afraid, but desperate.

He roared, shadows exploding outward in a spiral. The cold shattered. One priest fell. The other ran.

The Devotees turned on him now.

Ten of them.

Maybe more.

They moved fast—bodies shaped by Fluid, gifts surging through cracked skin. Wings of gold-fire, blades of bone, eyes like spotlights.

Asmodeus was a storm with one wing.

He met them anyway.

One leapt from the left—he caught her with a backfist that shattered her jaw.

Two more charged with spears of crystallized energy—he dodged the first, caught the second, and snapped it in half, stabbing one through the chest.

Another drove a burning pike into his ribs.

He screamed.

Grabbed the attacker by the face.
