Evelyn's POV
My eyes snapped open.
I blinked at the ceiling for a moment, waiting for... something. Panic, maybe. But it didn't come.
Just... quiet.
No water. No screaming. No ghosts hovering over me.
Sunlight crept through the curtains, casting a faint gray-blue glow across the room. The old clock on the wall ticked steadily. Somewhere outside, waves rolled against the shore. Familiar sounds. Mundane, even.
Still, I didn't trust it.
I sat up slowly, half-expecting my clothes to be damp, my hair tangled with seaweed or something. But everything was dry. Boots by the door-muddy, but dry. Coat on the chair-neatly folded, no sign of the soaking it should've taken.
Weird.
I remembered it, though. The fall into the well. Cold water everywhere. The panic. And then... her.
That part still gave me goosebumps.
She hadn't been scared. Just cold. And oddly gentle. Like someone helping you up after a nasty spill-which, to be fair, is exactly what it felt like.
I pressed a hand to my chest. No waterlogged lungs. Just a jittery heartbeat and a dull headache.
Was it a dream? A really detailed one?
I stood up, wobbling slightly, and made my way to the camera. It sat on the table like it had never moved.
I powered it on and flipped through the footage.
Dinner. Banter. Ethan cracking jokes. James being all serious about wine.
And then... nothing.
No forest. No well. No shaky night-vision tumble. Just a typical evening.
Battery full. Memory card intact.
Huh.
I grabbed my laptop and sank into the chair, flipping it open and pulling up a blank document.
Woke up dry. No bruises or scratches.
Camera shows nothing after dinner.
Everything still feels real.
The fall. The water. Her.
Too vivid to be a dream. Right?
I don’t know. I just don’t know.
I stared at the words on the screen, tapping my fingers anxiously against the keyboard. Was I losing it?
Or was something seriously weird going on?
I caught my reflection in the mirror. I looked... fine. A little pale. Definitely confused. But fine.
Still, something was off. A kind of quiet hum beneath my skin, like a song I couldn't quite hear.
I should've been terrified. But mostly? I was curious.
If she was real, then this story had just taken a turn I didn't see coming.
I picked up the camera.
Time to start digging. Something told me the answers were going to be worth it.

I stepped into the kitchen and found James and Ethan at the table, half-eaten breakfasts in front of them. James looked up and grinned.
