Evelyn's POV
The car hummed beneath us, the early morning sun casting long streaks across the dashboard. I sipped the lukewarm coffee cradled between my palms, letting the bitter taste wake up whatever part of me hadn’t yet shaken off last night.
“I didn’t know you’d take that whole promise to protect me so seriously,” I said, side-eyeing Arya with the smallest smirk. “Driving me to the office? That’s above and beyond, Knight Arya.”
She didn’t even glance at me. Just kept her hands steady on the wheel. “You think I wouldn’t fulfill my promise?”
There was something calm but sharp in the way she said it. I felt my mouth twitch—half a smile, half a wince. I did think she would. But also… I wasn’t used to people who actually kept their promises.
Still, I didn’t say that out loud. Instead, I leaned back, let the coffee warm my fingers, and said, “Well, now that we’re making promises and being all loyal and mysterious—how about you tell me your past? What really happened.” I dragged out the word really, watching for a flicker in her expression.
But Arya went silent.
Not stiff. Not tense. Just… still.
I tilted my head and started to chant her name under my breath like a child poking a bear just to see if it’ll growl. “Arya... Aryaaa... Aryaaa—”
My phone buzzed against my leg, cutting through the game.
Dad.
I blinked and swallowed, then picked up. “Hi, Dad.”
His voice came through warm and casual. “Hey, sweetheart. How’s my girl?”
I smiled without meaning to. “I’m okay.”
“Your mom’s at the hospital,” he said. “Double shift again. By the way, I tried calling you last night, but you didn’t pick up.”
I paused. My fingers tightened around the paper cup. Lying to my parents wasn’t something I liked doing. But telling them the truth—that I’d been kidnapped and almost murdered—felt worse.
“I was busy,” I said quickly. “That’s all.”
There was a pause on his end. Then his voice softened. “Evelyn… you can tell me anything, okay? Did something happen? Are you worried about something?”
My chest tightened, and I stared out the window. I could still see the edge of the bruise on my wrist beneath my sleeve. I opened my mouth—and then glanced at Arya.
A spark of mischief clicked into place.
“No, nothing like that,” I said, brightening my tone. “I was just working. You know how I get. I start something and forget the whole world exists.”
“If you’re sure…”
“If you’re that worried,” I added casually, “you can always call my roommate.”
“Your… roommate?” he repeated, confused.
“Yep. I just got one.” I grinned at Arya as I said it. “She’s very sweet. Worries about me constantly. You’d like her. Her name’s Arya. I’ll send you her number, just in case.”
“Okay… love you.”
“Love you too.”
The moment I ended the call, I tapped out a quick message and hit send—with the volume up, so Arya could hear the whoosh.
“Sent,” I announced sweetly.
Arya flicked me a glance, one eyebrow raised. “You happy doing this childish act?”
