Rule Number Two: Always Be Fashionably Late
"Okay," I heard myself say. Wait-what? Had I really just agreed to help this girl-Lucy-become someone date-worthy? No. Of course not. I wouldn't do that. I'd be out of my mind if I did that! My best friend Jellal was staring at me with disbelieving wide eyes, apparently as shocked at my words as I was.
"R-really?" The girl asked incredulously, brown eyes wide, full mouth flubbing like a fish's. I didn't blame her. Her face showed everything I felt. I couldn't fathom why I told this girl that I would help her. I never helped any girl. I used them. I'm not going to lie-I mercilessly use girls then toss them when I'm done. Sure, I'm not proud of it, but there are plenty of fish in the sea, and you can't always have a goldfish. Sometimes I'm in the mood for an angel fish, or an awesome fighter fish. Anyways.
"Yeah, why not? I've got nothing better to do, and this is something I've never done before," I said coolly, the opposite of how I felt on the inside. There was no way I was going to be able to help this girl out. It was more than the fact that she wanted me to help her land some other guy. It was the fact that she was a short, curvy, blonde-haired, brown-eyed firecracker.
This was new to me. I felt different looking at this girl. She was pretty; there was no doubt about it. But she wasn't what I usually went for. My usual type was tall, leggy, brainless, and easy to get. But this girl standing before me. . .well, there was no way to describe her beauty. Her brown eyes were like a doe's, innocent yet mischievous and wicked. Her straight blonde hair went down to her shoulder blades, thick and shiny. She was short, only about five foot two, with many curves. She wasn't fat, but she wasn't completely thin, either. She had generous hips, a nice round butt, and a perfect sized. . .you know.
"So, hot stuff, you wanna meet me at the love shack tonight, around say, eight o'clock?" I asked suggestively, wagging my eyebrows and placing an arm around her shoulders.
"Ugh, please don't start. I'm not interested in some womanizer. So just take your little fake charm and scurry away. I'll meet you at Sonic later at six." And with that she walked away.
I watched her go, interested in the sway of her hips as she walked. It wasn't deliberate or even sexy, but something about it caught my attention. I watched her cross Main Street and go to a little cluster of people, talking to them and laughing about something. Tearing my gaze from her, I looked around, trying to find Gray Fullbuster, the guy Lucy wanted to hook. He stood right in the center of Main Street, looking completely at ease, laughing with friends, talking, being Mr. Caring. I'd talked to Gray before, and he was a good guy, but he wasn't right for Lucy, for obvious reasons. I know that nobody else here at Fairy Tail High could see it, but I could. It was all in the way he walked and treated people. He was kind, caring, and overly compassionate. He went out of his way to make sure people were alright, always made sure not to hurt his opponents on the mats, always dressed impeccably and coordinating but not in a way that made it obvious.
Oh sure, maybe they couldn't see, but it was perfectly clear to me. I knew it with every fiber of my being. It was sad, really. I could tell that Lucy really liked the guy, but he would never return her feelings. No, not because Lucy was a dog-she was actually gorgeous in her own way-but because of one huge, vital piece of information. It was because Gray was in love with someone else. And though I didn't know who exactly that someone was, I knew that there wasn't anything I could do about it.
I drove into the parking lot of Sonic Burger at six fifteen later that evening, cruising into a parking space and climbing out of my black Dodge Ram 150, a sixteenth birthday present from my parents I'd received about two years ago. Walking across the nearly deserted parking lot, thumbs stuck in the belt loops of my pants, I confidently strode to where Lucy sat, irritably sucking on the straw of her slush.
