After the kiss, everything changed. We were still friends, but now we were friends who kissed and held each other and said things most friends didn't say. We were more than friends, and to say I loved it was an understatement.

Today we were back at the pond, laying on the grass. Halley's head was resting on my stomach as I played with her blonde locks. The sun was shining around her and she was almost glowing. I don't think I had ever seen something so beautiful and sweet.

"I could lay like this forever," She murmured, and I nodded in agreement.

"You wouldn't get bored?" I asked because, well, she was Halley DeMarco. She liked action and adventure. She liked diving into the unknown with her eyes shut, laughing as she soared through the air.

"With you?" She echoed, readjusting so she was straddling my stomach. I gulped, forcing myself to look in her eyes and pretend I wasn't affected. "Never."

I smiled, blushing as she bent over to press a kiss to my forehead. Her lips slid, trailing kisses down the slope of my nose until they finally captured my lips.

"You know what's funny?" She asked between kisses. "I spent my whole life waiting to get out of this town and see the world, but I could stay here forever with you."

I blushed again, my hands finding the small of her back. "What do you want to see?"

"Everything," She said instantly. "The Eiffel Tower, the Van Gogh Museum, the White House, the Great Wall of China, Niagra Falls... I deferred from college so I can spend this year doing some travelling, but I obviously can't afford all that."

"Someday," I promised, even though there was no way I could guarantee that and we both knew it. I think in that moment, the idea was enough.

Suddenly Halley stood, readjusting her sundress. "Wanna swim?"

"At the beach?" I echoed. "What happened to wanting to stay here forever?"

She laughed. "I meant in the pond."

"Right," I scoffed. "I suppose we'll just swim in our clothes then."

She rolled her eyes, slipping out of her dress. Anything else I had to say died on my tongue as I watched her, clad in a yellow lace bra and underwear, walk to the edge of the pond. She jumped, and a splash informed me of when she hit the water. When she came up for air, I laughed.

"You're out of your mind," I shook my head.

"Okay," She shrugged. "So come be crazy with me."

I opened my mouth to protest, but then realized I didn't want to. Bracing myself, I tugged off my T shirt and shorts before joining Halley in the water. She met me underwater, waving, and I rolled my eyes but waved back.

When we both surfaced, she exclaimed, "I almost forgot to tell you!"

I raised my eyebrows, waiting for her to catch me up.

"We're going on a date tonight."

I coughed. "A date?"

"Yes, a date," She stuck her tongue out. "Girlfriends do that, you know."

A grin broke out across my face. "Girlfriends, huh?"

"I hope so," She smirked. "Because otherwise it might be awkward when I do this."

Before I could question what she meant, Halley lunged across the water, swinging her legs around my waist and her arms around my neck. When she kissed me, our teeth collided because we couldn't stop smiling.

There was something different in the air that night. It was that same feeling that came when you transferred from childhood to adolescence, trading in pixie sticks for cigarettes and juice boxes for vodka. Halley showed up at my door wearing a tight red dress. I wore a black dress and red lipstick that Penny insisted would look incredible on me. When we settled into the taxi that she had called, I knew. This wasn't sharing a beer on her roof at unthinkable hours of the night, or lingering glances and subtle hints. This was real.
