here's a script although the video is in production!!
Hi, I'm bounce and my internal narrator is a mix of Markiplier, J Carlin, John Green, and Alex Kapranos.
In other news, today I'm gonna be talking about something franz ferdinand never really talks about -- where they went wrong.
Yesterday I was looking up some pictures for my Instagram and I found this article about franz ferdinand (link down below) which led me to find out a few things about them and their music.
The first thing isn't really that bad, but it led to the rest of this huge conflict.
The frontman of the band usually is the one that appeals to all the young kiddos. They're the one the band gets famous for. So ideally, to bring in more teenage fans, the lead singer would have to be on the younger side of the band. But when the lead singer is mine entire years older than the bassist, that's not exactly ideal. There's really nothing wrong with that, it's just that it sets up some kind of mindset.
The guys thought that they had to become the leaders of the alt rock scene before they were passed off as "those old guys."
And so, they started rushing. They started touring their first album in 2004, and while they were touring, they wrote their second album. They were done with the second album in 2005 and quickly released it. Because of the worldwide praise of the first album, You Could Have It So Much Better instantly got big. That's all good, right?
Well, no. Not at all. Back to back albums never happen. And when they do, they have nothing different. They sound rushed. You Could Have It So Much Better is an amazing album, but it reuses some of the same ideas repeatedly and sometimes I have to legitimately think about what song is on, but with the other albums, that's never a problem.
For example, the first album. The Dark Of The Matinee has its quirky charm, Take Me Out has its classic riff and repetitive vocals, and Tell Her Tonight completely switches it up and has Nick on lead vocals. All of the songs on the album are totally different from each other.
Anyway, YCHISMB was HUGE in the alt rock scene. Franz Ferdinand were playing festivals, making music videos, and playing individual concerts, all while touring. The guys were in this rush until 2008 when they started furiously working on Tonight.
They thought that to keep the appeal to the young kiddos, they had to completely flip their style. And it was AWESOME. Tonight was a huge success, although many fans, or young kiddos, were disappointed that Franz Ferdinand hadn't fully kept their "post punk jam style."
After touring Tonight, that's when the guys realized where they went wrong: because of five years of persistently being there, constantly doing something new, the band had lost their appeal to young kiddos, and themselves.
Paul just gave up on life.
Nick became extremely depressed and no longer wanted to play music.
Alex wasn't as enthusiastic as usual.
And Bob was still just our happy, optimistic, vegan feminist. He was the one keeping the band together at this point.
It wasn't until 2012 that Right Thoughts Right Words Right Action really got started. It was finished in August 2013, and was Franz Ferdinand's most diverse and well made album! It didn't stick to mostly one theme like the others. Every song sounds different, and although they lost most of their "post punk jam" style, it has received and continues to receive amazing reviews.
After their 2013 / 2014 tour (ending in mid 2014 pretty sure), the guys started FFS in early 2015.
Today's question is: after this hectic backstory, what do you guys think Franz Ferdinand will do in the future? Comment down there and I'll talk about you answers next time!
Peace out and stay Franzy, you weird cute nerds!
