Aaron woke up to the smell of chocolate chip cookies, the kind her dad liked to make as a peace offering after they had fought. She also noticed that she had a throbbing in her head similar to the one she would get after having one too many drinks. Forcing herself to sit up, she surveyed her surroundings and tried to figure out where she was. She sat in the middle of a clearing, tall trees enveloping the small space as if sheltering it from any onlookers. Aaron couldn't think of when she would have gotten here, as she specifically remembered falling asleep to the sound of Mozart and Emma's steady breathing.
Shit, she thought to herself, Emma had to have noticed her absence by now. Aaron patted down each pocket until she found the one that held her phone. The phone's home screen showed 1 missed call and 2 text messages, and a 1% battery. The phone stayed on for about 30 seconds longer, then the screen faded to black, completely dead. Aaron groaned, knowing that the next time she saw her sister she'd be toast. She stood up, ignoring her sore muscles and paced the perimeter trying to find a gap in the tree line.
"It's over here Aaron." A voice rang out coming from the opposite direction Aaron was facing. Aaron spun around and looked into the branches for the source of the voice. "It's kind of hard to see unless you know where to look." A small girl sauntered out of the woods and right up to Aaron. Her dark skin and bright red hair startled Aaron into silence. "Scarlet." Seeing Aaron's confusion, the girl smiled, "My name. Scarlet."
"Aaron... But you already knew that," Aaron recalled, " How did you know that?"
"A magician never reveals her secrets" Scarlet replied with a wink. "Follow me." Without waiting for Aaron, Scarlet strode into the trees, lifting a single branch to reveal a heavily trodden path. Aaron hesitated for only a moment, and hoped to God that she wasn't walking into a trap designed to murder unsuspecting innocents who had lost their way.
Aaron had to run to catch up to Scarlet. "You know for someone so...petite, you sure walk fast." Scarlet just smiled and slightly slowed her pace. The pathway was just big enough for the both of them to stand side by side. They walked for about half an hour before the path opened up and into what Aaron would call a pavilion.
"Welcome to the Eros Plaza." Scarlet said.
