At age fifteen, all females of the supernatural world are considered adults. It's the same with the guys except they're considered grown up by their seventeenth birthday and I don't know what happens to them. But several things happen on the eve of a girls fifteenth birthday: their one power is unlocked, they are given a single strip of paper with their soulmates name and supernatural race on it, and one week to prepare to see them.
Oh sorry, I'm getting ahead of myself. Hi! My names Coralia and I am a mermaid. I have been both dreading and awaiting my fifteenth birthday since my older sister was rejected by her soulmate two years ago. And I have a feeling my love life's not gonna go so well either. Why? You ask. Let's just say my luck has never been very good.
My father was never around much when I was little, mostly because he and my mother weren't actually soulmates. His soulmate ran off with a werewolf, apparently they knew each other before they were mated and I guess he bullied her. So there's that and the fact that my mother was always depressed because her actual soulmate was murdered... She never got over it.
And me well... Let's just say out of my four siblings, I'm the youngest, dumbest, ugliest and least athletic. Good things have never come my way easily, unlike my four older siblings.
My oldest brother was champion swimmer in high school and set three sea records! He was offered a full scholarship to the best mercollege in the whole ocean! Plus, his soul mate turned out to be his best friend, a fairy. Ah, you thought it ended there? Well, you're wrong, here's where it goes downhill. His mate turned out to be infertile so they can't have any children. And, about a year ago, he was involved in a terrible accident and now can't compete in swim competitions anymore, he was lucky he wasn't paralyzed. He almost had to drop out of school.
My oldest sister was the smartest out of all of us. She was valedictorian and yet, for some reason, her mate still cheated on her with another mermaid and now has two kids with the sea-devil. I guess it has something to do with the fact that he's a demon.
And you know what happened to my other sister and her elf. She was the most beautiful out of all of us, so what chance do I have when I'm not even slightly pretty?
I have a feeling I'm going to have the worst luck of all my siblings because that's what I've been stuck with my whole life. While my two older sister have super curly rich auburn hair, I was stuck with inky-black, stick-straight, super-long hair that always gets tangled in my tail. My tail is a powder blue, and blue is my least favorite color. Since I'm the least athletic, I'm not the skinniest. I wouldn't say I'm fat but I'm definitely... What's the word... Curvy? Anyways, on top of that, my eyes are lilac. That's right, lilac! Why couldn't my eyes have been orange or green or even yellow?!? Why something as common as lilac?
Well, that's not bad luck I guess. No, my bad luck began in kindergarten. On the first day of school, the class bully dumped a tray of paint on my hair and turned my inky hair to bloody hair and scared all the kids into thinking I was a demon.
In fifth grade, when the teachers had us all try human food for the first time, I tried a mushroom and threw up all over the same bully from kindergarten.
In eighth grade chemistry I added the wrong chemicals together and they exploded and turned me green! So I've basically had a catastrophe every year and, because of this, my love life is as nonexistent as my friends list.
Well, there's just one species that I am praying I don't get paired with, and that's the vampire. But I'm not too worried, since a mermaid and a vampire have never been paired before, and I'll let you in on why.
Did you know that a long time ago there was no such thing as mermaids? Yeah, that's why we share the same main characteristic as vampires: we can't be in the sunlight. Why do you think we're in water all the time? We can only come out at night to shift into our human forms. But, during the day, we can barely even go near the surface with out shriveling up!
Anyways, before there were mermaids and vampires, there were two clans of vampires: the Silver Coven and the Midnight Coven. And to put it nicely, they didn't always get along. Both clans fought over land, prey, and humans to turn into vampires. The only thing they both agreed on was that there wasn't enough space for the both of them.
The smaller of the fighting clans, the Midnight Coven, decided to do something about it. They planned to do something no one had dared to do before- change their very forms. But the only way to do that would be to offer a sacrifice to The Great Luna: a blood sacrifice of a pure-blood vampire.
There aren't many of them left but they finally found one... A child from the Silver Coeven. So they drew blood from him and offered it to The Great Luna. Bippity-boppity-boo! We have mermaids! But here's where it went wrong. As punishment, for taking blood from the child and going against their very nature, The Great Luna decided that mermaid blood would be even more temping to vampires than any other blood in the world. But it's not like we needed another reason to avoid the other clan, they already hated us.
Crap! I probably just jinxed it. Watch, tomorrow when I get my soulmates name and supernatural race, just you watch it be a vampire. But that was centuries ago, we are civilized creatures now, in a modern day world.
I still hope that I don't get a vampire for a soul mate. Oh please, Great Luna, give me some good luck for once!
