I wake up in a dark room. I cannot see anything. My body is numb, and I stand up carefully. I am outfitted in a simple black jacket, track pants, T-shirt and gray shoes. They seem good for camouflage. There's also a strange tattoo on my arm. It has a stripe through a weird symbol, and a line of words underneath. SPQR. I grope around in the darkness. My hand lands on a smooth, concrete wall.
Where am I?Suddenly, I realise I have no idea where I came from, who my family is, what I'm doing here. The only one thing that I remember is my name. It flashes through my thoughts, and I grab hold of it before it is gone.
Hazel Levesque.
I feel my way around the room. It is small, and I know it was meant to make me feel claustrophobic. But I take comfort in the darkness, for a reason I don't know. I grope around on the floor now, to see if I can use anything.
Suddenly, a loud booming voice comes on, with a little static. It's recorded.
"Welcome, tributes! All twenty-four of you have been selected for this trial, for reasons I am not allowed to specify. You are against twenty-two others, and you have one ally, which has already been allocated. You can find more information in the book in the corner of your chamber. You have an ally, who is on the other side of one wall of your chamber. You have five minutes to prepare yourself, then a ladder will drop down into the chamber and the battle will begin. May the odds be ever in your favour."
More static, then silence.
I get onto my hands and feet and look for the book. My hands brush across the leather cover soon enough and I pick it up. As I open it, the pages light up, and I can see the fading black words on the book.
Your ally is Frank Zhang. You must stay with him, and survive as a team. If you and Frank are the last ones surviving, you automatically win. However, if Frank is killed, you will have to win by killing everyone else and surviving on your own. There are sources of weapons and other things you may need to survive located across the arena. Good luck.
There is nothing else written in the book. I look up as a loud grinding sound echoes through the small chamber. The wall on my right is slowly sliding upward.
As the wall slides open, I turn the book to face the widening gap. The light shines into the chamber next to me. There is a stout-looking Chinese boy standing in the light. He is wearing the same outfit as me.
"Well, I guess we're allies," I started, picking my words carefully. "I'm Hazel Levesque."
"Frank Zhang," the boy says as he steps into my chamber and shakes my hand.
Just then, another grinding noise starts and I turn around to see a ladder decending from a widening hole from the ceiling, allowing sunlight from the world outside to stream into the room.
