No luck. Barnes had stayed down the whole time she was "examining" him. Whatever sedatives they were using, they were good. She had to revert to Plan B. in order to make sure the Soldier was awake when she got to him, Angel instructed Dr. Thomasson to put him off the sedatives completely. That way The Soldier would be awake, and she'd know where all the guards would be.

She sighed as she took a shuttle to the edge of the forest. This was going to be one of her toughest missions yet.

--

Angel hopped from one beam to another, her black moccasin boots making no sound, black wings spread behind her for balance. She had her usual black gear on, along with her black sling bag, and her senses were open, trying to find a familiar scent or hear a familiar heartbeat. She was sure she had met all the guards already.

She was still a few floors above the holding cells. She walked across the beam to the other end, where a closed door was waiting. According to the blueprints, the cells were still three floors down.

The corridor was deserted, and so was the lab below it. It was around midnight, and the scientists had long gone. Now all she had to worry about were the guards that were patrolling the corridors and the perimeter. Ever since Barnes broke in and successfully assassinated the head scientist, the guards had doubled. It was a SHIELD protected facility, and Angel was surprised Romanov or Barton weren't around.

She jumped off the beam and landed in front of the door. Using a passkey that Rumlow had given her, she unlocked the door and climbed into the elevator on the other side. She pushed one of the buttons and entered a special code. The elevator jerked as it made its way down.

Angel quickly pulled out a Desert Eagle and a Machine Gun from her bag, and readied herself. She wasn't given an exact number of guards on duty, but she hoped she didn't have to empty her rounds on them. The elevator doors dinged, and she switched the safety off both guns.

Thirty men turned their heads and looked at the opening doors, Angel smiled at them, tucking her wings back into her shoulder.

"Good evening boys," she grinned, and let the bullets fly.

A few minutes later, Angel stepped over one of the bodies that were bleeding on the floor. All thirty men dead; all thirty men who were doing their jobs the same way she was doing hers. She shook her head at the waste of life, all because HYDRA couldn't pull out one man. She sent a little prayer to whatever divine being there was that they wouldn't need to kill anyone else, but she doubted it, not with the alarm now blaring around the building. She and Barnes would have to fight it out.

The Soldier heard the gunshots from outside his cell. He was still groggy from all the drugs that were put into his system, but his senses were alert. He knew he couldn't escape unless someone opened the door for him from the outside. It was reinforced steel, and judging by the very slight dents his metal arm could make in it, it was filled with cement. So he decided to sit back, and listen. The gunshots suddenly died down, he hoped it was his extraction unit. Being in an underground, windowless cell for three days was a little too much for him.

But he did hope she was the one behind the door when it opened. He closed his eyes and tried to recall her face again, over the past few days it was getting easier and easier. Just then the door opened, and a woman with her long hair in a ponytail tossed a handgun at him, and he caught it with his human hand.

"Hey, Soldier," her very familiar voice greeted, "Remember me?" she asked over the blaring alarm as large black wings sprouted out of her shoulders.

"Angel?" he whispered, eyes wide, but a smile formed on his lips.

"Hello, handsome," she smiled as she stepped away from the door and he finally saw her face, "Glad you remember me."

The Soldier stepped out of his cell and squinted at the flashing red lights, "How could I forget?"

Angel chuckled, "You'd be surprised, stud," and gestured to the elevator, "You ready to dance?"

"Sure," The Soldier answered as he slung a couple of the dead guards' rifles over his shoulder and tucked a few of their handguns into his belt.

"Good," Angel grinned as she opened the elevator, the rifle she also took from one of the dead bodies now at the ready in her hands, "Let's go."

"Are we going to the roof?" he asked her as he took a ready stance with the rifle in hand.

"No," Angel answered him, "Can't carry you that far in the amount of time we need. We'll have to run."

"Copy," he told her.

"We'll be on the second floor, jump out the nearest window and head for the forest in the east, if we get separated, just keep running east until you get to a dilapidated cottage about half a mile from here, understand?" she commanded him in hushed tones.

"Roger that," he whispered as the elevator doors dinged open, most of the guards on duty were at the holding cells. The twenty left on the main floor standing ready at the elevator doors didn't stand a chance.

With the alarms blaring in their ears, Angel and The Soldier jumped out the nearest window, her flying above the rooftop and shooting at every gunman she could see to distract them from him running to the forest.

As soon as she saw he was in the clear, she flew higher, high enough to be mistaken for an owl on patrol, and made her way to their rendezvous point. She assessed herself for any wounds, and found that two bullets had grazed her shoulders and her ear had a cut. Her knee was wet, but she was sure that wasn't her blood.

Body count, 48, for this night alone, Valkyrie, She thought to herself as she soared, If only I still believed in penance and forgiveness.
