I stirred in my sleep as the sound of my phone ringing tried to pull me from my slumber. Ignoring the annoying thing, I pulled the pillow over my ears and attempted to drift back into sleep. However, the faint yet persistent ringtone continued relentlessly, as if someone’s arse is on fire and only can quench the fire.
Groaning, I reached out to my phone from the night stand, “Who's number is this?!” With an annoying sigh I received the call and asked, “Hello? Who's this?”
“Who am I? The audacity you have Purvi. I have to give you praise” sarcasm and pique visible in the other person’s voice.
“Excuse me? Do I know you? Listen if this is some kind of prank call drop it now I'm not going to entertain someone at seven in the morning!” irritability laced in my tone.
“God–this crazy–What's wrong with you woman?!” his screeched tone made me put the phone away from my ears.
“Excuse me–” I started but got interrupted.
“You're excused” the person retorted almost immediately.
Wait a damn minute!
“Lakshay? Is that you?!” The previous irritation was replaced with curiosity and excitement. “Took you long enough to remember me! How could you forget me?” he said, feigning hurt.
“Geez, so much drama. It’s not even your number, and it’s early in the morning—I was half asleep!” I defended myself groggily.
“You’re getting married and I had to find out through the freaking internet? How could you do this to your only best friend?!” he exclaimed in disbelief.
“I’m getting married?” I rubbed my eyes, still half-asleep. Oh, shit—I am! I just got engaged! “Oh! Yeah, I’m getting married!” I said, the realization finally hitting me.
“Seems like I’m the one informing you about your own wedding,” he scoffed.
“Nahi yaar, bahut dino baad achhi neend aayi thi… abhi bhi neend mein hoon,” I yawned, wiping away the tear that had formed in the corner of my eye.
“By the way, I did try calling you a few times after my marriage was fixed, but your number was always unreachable! It’s not my fault you had to find out from the internet,” I added, now fully awake.
“Oh—y-yeah, I forgot about that. Sorry. Anyway, now give me the details,” he said, quickly shifting gears.
“Nope! I’ll tell you in person. When are you coming back?” I asked.
“Next Monday!”
“You’re meeting me the moment you land—only then I’ll spill everything,” I demanded.
“Of course I will. Who else do I have apart from you?” he replied, his usually playful voice turning soft.
“True that. Okay, bye—love you!”
“Love yo—” I hung up before he could finish. Oops.
I blinked at the screen, finally noticing the flood of notifications that had piled up while I was sleeping.
I clicked open one of the notification.
