Up in the bathroom, I mechanically searched through the drawers, looking for anything that I'd brought with me. Opening one revealed my roll of dental floss, and I shoved it into my toiletry bag, trying not to think about what would happen if Dad managed to beat us back to the house.
He won't. He can't...
But I found myself moving faster, all the same.
Behind me, the door to Adam's room opened, and I glanced over my shoulder to see the man himself.
"Oh, hey." Even in my frantic haze, the sight of him calmed the unsettled part of me.
Walking in, he closed the lid on the toilet and sat down, watching as I searched.
"Ready to go?" He asked, but I heard the weight of something more in his voice.
"Just about," looking around me, I tried to see the bits and bobs that I was surely missing in my frenzy.
He nodded, not meeting my eyes, "Bruce's been on the phone since you two went to pack. Something about arranging a taxi and 'stalling him'."
I froze, "Stalling him?"
"Apparently, Bruce's got some pull at the private airfield. If your father tries to charter a flight, he's in for a rough time."
"Really?"
Adam shrugged, "Robbie's a random, demanding asshole while Bruce is a repeat customer who treats people well. It's not hard to see why they'd side with him."
I smiled to myself, "Bless that man."
"I just..." he sighed, "I wish I was going with you."
Pivoting, I started, "What do you-" And then I realized-
"You've already done so much for me - I can't let you do this, too."
The breath evacuated my lungs.
"Oh, right."
Jess was clear - it's just us going - Adam and Bruce are staying here.
"Yeah," his hands clenched in his lap, "I'd feel a lot better if I was going with you."
Setting my bag down, I leaned against the counter, facing him. "I guess if it's what Jess wants..."
"I'm worried." It was a plain statement, naked in its honesty.
"We'll be safe," I promised, wondering how I could possibly keep it.
Adam didn't respond, just looking at me as if he was wondering the same.
Well? How that hell am I going to manage it?
I wracked my brain, feeling the weight of Adam's unspoken question, when the answer came to me.
"David."
"David?"
"Dad's assistant," I explained. "He'd know Dad's itinerary, and he's not exactly a fan of Dad's, so I know he'd be willing to give us a head's up when he arrives. Hell, the first thing he's going to do is demand that David pick him up."
"Are you sure Robbie will call him? What if he takes a taxi-"
Adam cut off as I leveled an incredulous look at him.
Like Dad would ever willingly take a taxi.
"Alright," Adam conceded, "That's the plan, then." His warm, dark eyes held me transfixed for a moment, and I realized-
This is goodbye...
A thousand-ton weight slammed into my chest, and it felt like I couldn't breathe.
