**************The Raven.
That was what I was referred to by everyone I met through my journeys. It was a name the Lady of Light, Galadriel, had given me after I left Mirkwood the first time. Although my identity was not revealed to her, she knew I was one to fly from place to place and never make a nest. So from then on I introduced myself as the Raven. But there was another reason I kept the name. It had to do with a certain memory from my past life; however painful the memory was, I held onto the name.
My assignments led me all over Middle-earth. I travelled everywhere from The Shire, to Rohan, to the Far East past the Lonely Mountain, to the lands of Gondor, through Bree, and occasionally the Northern most regions of the land. Not only was I a scout but a messenger and assassin as well. Sometimes, other rulers would pay me to carry messages and scout for them. I delighted in traveling with news of other kingdoms and finding the locations of new enemies but despised taking what seemed o me as innocent people's lives. They were always the most dreaded parts of my journeys.
I was returning from the north where it seemed I had murdered a man with a family under orders of the King. Thranduil claimed he was evil and aiding the Orc uprising, but he man had two children and as I escaped into the night I heard their cries. Desperate to return to what was once my home, I stopped in Bree.
*Inside the Prancing Pony*
"Excuse me, sir. Sir?" A voice cut through the my thoughts of what would greet me when I returned to my former home. I turned my head slightly to see a young woman standing in front of me as I reclined against the wall. A slight chuckle escaped my lips. From the way she addressed me, I could tell that she saw my rugged appearance and figured I was a male ranger. Considering I had my hood up and the black cloth covering the bottom half of my face as well as a pint of ale in front of me, I understood how she made that mistake.
"Yes?" I responded in a low voice, unsure if she would realize her misconception.
"I was wondering if you would like a room tonight?" So the girl was the innkeeper's daughter and still hadn't caught onto my true gender. I wanted to get on the road soon, but her offer was so tempting. It had been months since I last slept on a bed.
"Yes, that would be nice," I replied. The girl motioned for me to follow her through the crowded room. Men drank and laughed, filling the room with busy noise. All the commotion made my head spin and hurt my sensitive elf ears. Through all the noise, one voice in particular caught my attention.
"Take back your homeland!"
Whipping my head around, I saw the figure that I knew belonged to the voice. "I will be right back," I told the innkeeper's daughter and made my way to the table. As I walked I noticed the man was not alone; he sat at a table across from a dwarf. "Gandalf," I stated. The man cloaked in grey clothes turned. At first it appeared he did not recognize me, but then realization lit up his eyes.
"Raven! It has been a long time!" Gandalf stood and hugged me. "What brings you to Bree?" he hastily whispered in my ear.
"I am returning home and stopped on the way," I raised an eyebrow at his question. Usually he did not question my whereabouts and he seemed alarmed that I found him. A cough stopped me from asking why he was curious, and our attention turned to Gandalf's companion.
