I stopped running once I reached the bridge. I looked back. I think I lost them. At this point, I couldn't even breathe. I had been running for what seemed like forever. They were fast. And they had those freaking police dogs. I couldn't run forever. There was no sign of any life ahead. Just a dark and empty road. If I kept running, surely they'd catch me. I was trapped. I walked towards the bridge's railings and looked down. It was a long fall for sure, a guaranteed death. I looked back into the woods I had just come out from. If they caught me, they would find him. The only way he would be safe is if I could escape. But, right now, there was no escape.

I made my choice. I didn't want anything bad to happen to him. I stepped over the railings to the other side of the bridge. All I had to do was let go and he would be safe. Just then I heard yells and dog barks. I closed my eyes, tears streaming down like waterfalls.

"Nicole! Don't jump," said the detective as he approached me with an army of police officers behind him, "Please. Just look at me. Don't let go. You don't have to do this, Nicole."

I turned my body to face him still holding on to the railings. "You can't save me. I told you from the beginning. I can't be saved."

"No, Nicole, please!" He ran towards me.

God, please forgive me. I closed my eyes and let go.

His face was all I saw.
