It was a wonderful morning, and Sha was jumping around her room after Sonya brought her the letter. Somehow—somehow—she didn't know how, but Floriana had written to her first. Her wonderful, beautiful friend had found her address and sent her a letter.
Floriana was going to marry the son of Squire Alfonso. According to her words, he was a good-looking young man with noble manners who had swept her off her feet. He had proposed immediately, and now her parents, along with Squire Alfonso, were preparing the wedding—an event to which Sha was also invited.
"I am so happy. He is like a prince from my dreams, my precious Sha. I hope to see you soon!"
Floriana's parents were wealthy merchants, and she would lack nothing on her wedding day. Sha was incredibly happy for her. Everything had turned out well. She had been afraid that one of the older men might choose Floriana—her friend's nightmare scenario—but thankfully, that hadn't happened.
"So, you're going to the wedding?" asked Sonya, her voice dreamy. "I wish I could go to a wedding like that too. I've never seen a beautiful one. Only once, when I was little, I saw a village wedding from afar."
"You've never been to a wedding?" Sha asked, surprised.
"Well, I've never actually been invited to one either," Sha admitted. "When I was small, we used to go with Grandma to the little town where she lived. Sometimes, if she knew the couple, she'd bring a gift. But I barely remember anything."
"I don't have a family," Sonya said quietly, turning her head toward the window. "Nobody invites me anywhere... but I don't lose hope."
She sighed and wiped the corner of her eye.
"I'll invite you to my wedding," Sha whispered, wrapping her arms around Sonya. "And I'll come to yours too. That way, you'll have at least two weddings to look forward to."
Sonya's eyes lit up, and she hugged Sha back tightly.
Just then, a loud knock sounded at the door.
"May I enter?" asked the Count as he stepped into the room.
He looked at them disapprovingly, his cold, beautiful face twisted in a grimace.
