Chapter 1
Three years later, I returned to Loretta Lyn's as the favorite to win, even though I had switched to a KX250F. I had even earned the nickname of Holeshot Hagan.
I proved true to that name by Holeshotting the first race. Never looking back, I finished with an impressive thirteen second lead!
I went into the second race on Cloud 9. But that's when disaster struck.
I got a horrible start because the back tire wouldn't get grip. As I went for a hard pass, the front tire slipped and I got run over. I had attained a broken collarbone, leg, and elbow, and was rushed to a hospital.
I was dumbfounded. I was racing incredibly fast and now I had to ruin it all!
Team Kawasaki kept their contract with me, even though it took a long time to recover. I finally made it back though.
When I did come back, the first person I met at Loretta's next year was Colton Nurenburg. He said that he would be competing in the 250 class as well. We both said good luck and went our separate ways. But I had a feeling that we would meet up again on the track.
As we lined up for the first race, I felt a deep calm settle over me, and I kept it throughout the race.
Once again, I grabbed the Holeshot and "shot" away. Colton got a bad start and I had no challenger for the whole race. I felt lucky.
On the podium, I said that I was just glad to be on the bike again with no injuries.
I met Colton after the race and asked how he felt. He said that he thought he had been in an airsoft war. (Apparently the roost hurt!) He asked me how I got such great starts. I said that I kept to a routine and just relaxed. He said that he'll try that, and a feeling of sickness come into my stomach. But, I thought, I should enjoy a challenge for once. Be careful for what you wish for.
