Pandora leaned against the kitchen counter, sipping the rest of her wine while Legend leaned back on the couch, watching her with something unreadable in his eyes. There was a weight in the air now, thick with things unsaid. They had kissed. That line had been crossed. It wasn't a maybe anymore, it wasn't flirting. It was real.
"You good?" he asked, voice low and husky.
Pandora gave a small nod, setting her glass in the sink and walking over. She curled up beside him on the couch, pulling a throw blanket over her lap.
"I just ain't used to this," she admitted, staring ahead at the TV though it wasn't really on. "Niggas usually don't wanna know me. Just want what they can get. Then they gone."
Legend reached out and grabbed her hand, brushing his thumb across her knuckles. "That ain't me, Ora. I see you."
She tilted her head toward him, searching his face. He said it like he meant it, like she was more than just another girl with a pretty face. More than her curves, her trauma, her past.
He rubbed the back of his neck. "I ain't even gonna lie, before I met you I was on some bullshit. Rotating women like tires. But I ain't feel none of them how I feel around you."
She gave a half-smile, soft and unsure. "What you feel then?"
He didn't even hesitate. "Peace."
Pandora looked down, her heart threatening to beat right out of her chest. Peace? That word alone almost brought her to tears. Because peace wasn't something she had felt in a long time. Her life had been full of storms, heartbreak, chaos... and now, this man, this tatted-up, smooth-talking, hoodie-wearing man was sitting here talking about peace?
"Can I ask you something real?" she said.
"Anything."
"If I told you I still have nightmares about the hospital... if I told you I ain't healed from losing her—my baby—would you still wanna deal with me?" Her voice cracked on the last word, and her eyes welled with tears.
Legend didn't answer with words at first. He just pulled her into him, arms wrapping tight around her like he was trying to hold all her broken pieces together. She melted into his chest, sobbing quietly, letting herself feel it all.
"You not too broken for love, Ora. You not too much. You not too complicated. You a woman who's been through shit and still got light in her. You still here. That mean something to me."
She gripped his hoodie tight, burying her face in his neck.
They stayed like that for what felt like hours. Eventually, her crying slowed, and Legend kissed the top of her head.
"Wanna go lay down?" he asked.
She nodded.

The bedroom was dim, lit only by the warm amber glow from the Himalayan salt lamp on her nightstand. Pandora changed into an oversized tee and slid under the covers while Legend stripped down to his tank top and boxers. He didn't touch her at first. Just laid beside her, close but not too close.
She turned to face him. "You ever been this close to someone this fast?"
"Never. But I don't question shit that feels real."
Pandora looked at him, really looked. He was flawed, scarred, and still healing, just like her. And yet, he made her feel like she was soft again. Like she didn't have to be on defense all the time. Like she could breathe.
She slid closer, resting her head on his chest. "Then let's not fuck it up."
Legend chuckled softly. "We won't. As long as you don't ghost me."
"Boy please. You might be the only nigga I actually answer back."
They laughed together, and it was the kind of laugh that healed something. That night, they didn't have sex. They didn't need to. They held each other, breathing in sync, heartbeats matching.
And somewhere between his arms and the softness of the sheets, Pandora felt safe enough to finally sleep.
Really sleep.
No nightmares.
Just peace.
