Chapter 4: I Can’t Even Hide for 24 Hours?

“I said who are you and why are you here?”

            “Ummm….”

“Is that the only word you know how to say?”

            “Ummm….”

“So, that would be a yes.” I said more to myself than him. I didn’t get this kid. He sneaks in and then doesn’t have the guts to actually talk. “Alright, let’s break this down. What’s your name?”

            “I- I’m Jake.”

“Okay Jake, now we are getting somewhere. Why were you climbing through my window?”

“I was dared to by my roommate.”

“A dare. Really? Isn’t that really middle school of you? Who dared you?”

            “My roommate, Matt.”

“Do you go to the school across the street?”

“Yeah, I just started there today.”

“Let me see if I have all of this right. Your name is Jake. You climbed through my window into your headmistress’s house on a dare by your roommate, Matt. Did I get everything?”

            “Yeah.”

“Was the dare to only climb in the house?”

“No I’m supposed to take a picture of the kitchen to prove I went downstairs.”

“Well, that is going to get you caught because the headmistress is downstairs.”

“That was sort of the point.”

“Okay. About this, I will go down and take the picture so you don’t get caught. But in return you can’t tell anyone about me.”

            “Ummm…”

“Really? Are we back to not being able to talk?” I was giving this kid a chance to impress his friend and not get in trouble and he didn’t know if he wanted to? Was he stupid or something?

“Well, no. I just don’t know why you would want to help me.”

“Because if you get caught, then I’ll be in trouble because you saw me. But if I do it then Ms. Baker won’t see you and I won’t get in trouble. Got it?” he was looking at me with a confused expression. “Just give me the camera.”

He handed it over without saying a word. “Okay. Stay here. Don’t say a word. Don’t move.”

He nodded and I closed the door behind me. I walked down to the kitchen. Luckily, Ms. Baker was in the living room asleep on the couch. I took a quick picture. The kitchen isn’t anything special. Just a like any other kitchen. A table, a fridge, an oven. All of the usual stuff.

I turned to go back up the stairs and had a brilliant idea. Instead of just that one picture, I was going to take one of Ms. Baker sleeping. That would probably make this Matt kid really impressed with Jake.

I don’t know why I was helping Jake so much. Maybe it was because I hadn’t talked to anyone other than family in a month.
