Chapter 12: Merry Christmas and a Happy New Fight
Three weeks, two feet of snow, and no contact. It’s almost Christmas now and Jake hasn’t been back since we almost got caught. Not only has he not come back but he rejects all of my calls and ignores my texts. He’s only sent me one text in response. It was just one word. Stop. That’s all he’s said to me. And I have no clue why.
After Elle told me Ms. Baker wanted to talk to me, I went and found her. But I defiantly wasn’t expecting what she told me. I wasn’t in trouble. She was just telling me that she wasn’t going to be around over Christmas break. She was going to Florida. Elle was going to a friend’s place. Meaning I was going to be alone.
I did mind it too much. I figured I could hang out with Jake some without worrying about being caught. But, oh boy was I wrong.
The whole school was now deserted. The faculty was gone except for a few that were leaving today. All of the students left last week. The school gave them a three week break. One week before Christmas and two after.
I should be used to it by now. But I’m not. It still sucks. But I’ll have to make the most of it. When life give you lemons and all that crap.
So I’m out on Trigger in the freezing cold. My teeth are chattering and Trigger is antsy. I give up. It’s just too cold. I’m going to go warm up. Once Trigger was back in his stall, I left the barn to go back inside and build a fire.
But I never made it. Instead I saw a car pull into the school. Curiosity got the best of me and I followed it. The car looked kind of familiar. It was a beige sedan. Then it hit me. It’s Austin’s car. The only reason Austin would be here would be to bring Jake, right?
I ran after the car now. While zipping my Carhart up just a little more, I have to know why he isn’t talking to me anymore. It stopped in front of Jake’s dorm and he stepped out. He ran inside leaving Austin alone in the car.
I got closer to the car. Austin wasn’t looking in my direction, so I opened the door and slid in. Without looking to see who had gotten in, Austin said, “Wow. That was fast. I thought you said you- Rikki? I thought you were Jake”
“I figured.”
“What are you doing here?” What am I doing here? This was a stupid idea.
“I saw the car and came to see who it was and I just thought I would say hi.”
“Oh, well hi. I’m not trying to be nosy, but Jake said you two weren’t speaking, why?”
“I don’t know. I’ve trying talking to him but he won’t talk to me.”
“Don’t worry about it. He’s an idiot. He’ll be talking to you in no time.”
“I hope so. I should probably go before he comes back out.” I said while opening the door.
“Bye, Rikki. Oh wait, what are your plans this break?”
“Nothing much. My aunt’s in Florida and my sister’s at a friend’s so it’s just me and my horse.”
“That sucks.”
“It’s fine. Bye, Austin.” I climbed out of the car and walked away. A single tear fell down my face against my will. This break was not one I was looking forward to.
