Chapter 20: You’re My Best Friend

Rikki’s POV

Move on. He doesn’t want you as a friend.

But I want him as a friend.

He hasn’t talked to you in a week.

I know but that doesn’t mean I still don’t want my best friend back.

            Yes it does.

            No it doesn’t.

            Yes it does.

No. Now shut up you stupid little voice. I am supposed to be focusing on my math work.

For the past week, anytime I have a few minutes to myself, I argue with myself about Jake. I still can't believe he just stopped talking to me like that. I know I said I wouldn’t let him make me suffer but it’s hard.

The truth is I miss him. He is, or at least was, my best friend. To have him just turn away caused more pain than I could have imagine. I just want to talk to him and hang out again.

Stupid math. I just want to mope not find the value of x. my phone beeped and stopped my internal rant from forming. Checking it, I had a new text from Izzy. She checks on me constantly now even though I said I was fine.

“Come by my room after 8 tonight. I want to introduce you to my roommates.”

            “K.”

She had told her roommates everything yesterday. Which means, Liz and Amber now know about our parents. They didn’t before and I had intended to leave it that way. Too late now.

I gave up on focusing on my math work. I can't do it. I am way ahead of my class as it is and this past week, I have done even more. My teachers won't care if I just log off.

But now I have noting to do. I’ll go for a walk and enjoy the last of the summer weather. Maybe I’ll go into town. I have eight hours to kill before I can go to Izzy’s.

I grabbed my wallet and phone and started my trek into town. Going through the woods cuts the time in half but I was going really slowly so it still took me an hour.

By the time I made it into town, I was starving. There is a little diner that seems like it will satisfy my hunger.

Inside, it had a fifties feel. The floor was checkered black and white. The booths were red leather. There was a counter in the middle with bar stools lining it. In the corner there was a juke box. Not seeing anyone around I sat down at a booth and looked at the menu.

There was so much there for a small town diner. Malts and shakes jumped out at me. Well, more of the shakes than the malts. I’ve had malts and even though I like Whoppers, I don’t like malts. So, a vanilla milkshake and a cheeseburger.

“Hey. Paige there is someone out there.”

I looked up from the menu and saw Paige coming towards me. I hadn’t seen her since I had gone into her store to clean up.

            “Rikki?”

            “Hi, Paige. How’s things?”

“Good. So what can I get you?”
