I was talking to my brother about fanfiction, and I devised something too good to let fall on the wayside, Levels of fanfiction. It is a scale of 1-5, here is how it is:
1- the original source material: Any book, movie, TV show or other media that a fanfiction is based on.
Example: Harry Potter
2- AU/DifPOV: Very similar to the source material, with the same characters, but with either a different point of view, and/or with a core event in the story changed. Some headcannons fall into this category.
Example: Harry Potter from Voldemort's point of view, Star Wars, except Anakin never turned to the dark side.
3- Same universe, different story: This is a fanfiction that takes place in the same universe as the source material, except with different characters and plot.
Example: a warriors clan of your own making
4- Crossovers: This is a fanfiction that combines more than one universe in a way that makes sense. If the universes do not mesh in a way that makes sense, it belongs in the 5th category.
Example: Star Wars, except the main characters are cats in two clans, EmpireClan and RebelClan, and act like clans in Warriors.
5- Nonsense: This is a fanfiction that uses characters from the source material, but the things that they do make no sense compared with the original. Many headcannons fall into this category.
Example: A soccer tournament featuring teams made of characters from LOTR (my friend and I are making this, it may come out on Wattpad soon!)
