Hit me baby, one more time!
Lacey moaned as Britney Spears belted from her front seat. It was cold and dark outside, and her thin jacket could only keep part of her body warm. Her legs were tingling with the cool night air.
“Shit,” she muttered as she reached for her phone. The screen blinked brightly and her eyes adjusted to the new glare.
New text from Adam: Call me in the morning. Love you. Xx
She shivered and pulled her jacket tighter around her shoulders. It was cold for a summer night; her legs were proof of that. She fired a rapid response. I’ll be alright. Love you 2. Xx
She wanted to go back to sleep, but her eyes refused to shut. Sighing, she climbed back into the driver’s seat and drove, not caring where she was going. It was so typical of her to do it. After all, she had done it too many times to count ever since she was in college; she was and always had been a wandering insomniac. She finally pulled up in a park, where she climbed out lazily, half-walking, half-slumping until she found a deserted picnic blanket near a tree. Pulling the blanket drowsily to her body, she leaned back on the tree and slept.
--
When she awoke, she heard voices.
“Is that Dr. Evans?”
“Good God, is she homeless?”
“Where does she take all the money if she didn’t buy a home?”
“Drugs, booze? God knows, Jerry.”
She wrinkled her nose and opened her eyes, giving her crowd a death glare. “I’m perfectly fine, folks. No drugs, no booze. I just needed to clear my head, and I fell asleep. I’m sorry for the disturbance. Your children are perfectly safe with me.”
The red-headed woman, who had been the one to make the comment about drugs and booze shook her head disgustedly and walked away with “Jerry,” muttering about the next messed-up generation of doctors.
Lacey bit her lower lip, just as she heard a recognizable female drawl, “What a surprise finding you like this, Lace.”
She knew who it was even before she turned around. “Emma.” In any other case, she’d be embarrassed to have someone find her in her condition, but Emma, or Emma-Lynn as she was born, was the exception. They had known each other for so long, it was as if they were blood sisters. Sisters from different misters, they had said so long ago. Even if they looked nothing alike; Emma with her pitch black bob and perfectly dark brown almond shaped eyes were different, yet complimentary to Lacey’s longer brown hair and gray eyes.
“So, Ali told me you were MIA yet again, and I thought I’d scour the town for a doctor who looks like a hobo.”
“Ha-ha, very funny,” Lacey tried to frown, but failed as she looked at Emma-Lynn in her casual sweats and t-shirt. “I bet you didn’t even try to look for me. You probably saw me by chance. Looks like you’re running this morning.”
Emma narrowed her eyes. “Of course I’m running. I always go for a run in the mornings. You know that.” She gave Lacey a long, pointed look and Lacey sighed.
“Hey,” Lacey crossed her arms defensively. “I’m curvy and healthy. I’m a doctor. I know so.”
Emma snorted. “I’m a doctor too. You should get more exercise, babe. We’re gonna hit the thirties soon enough. I don’t want fat tires and love handles in my thirties.”
Lacey rolled her eyes. “I’ll be fine.”
Emma winked. “Oh, lighten up. I’m just joking. You know I love you. And more importantly, you know you look great.” She came closer as if to try to give Lacey a hug, but Lacey evaded the touch smoothly.
