I awake from my dream and my lung immediately fill with smoke. My room is a blaze. And everyone else is asleep.
Our fire alarm is broken, so I let out an ear piercing scream to alert the rest of my family of the fire. I hear the door across the hall open, along with the three doors downstairs.
"Fire!" I scream. "Everybody get out!!"
I hear the front door swing open and my brother runs down the hallway towards the stairs so he can get out, too. I start to feel panic, because I don't know how I'm going to get out. The fire is blocking my door and the flames are licking up my curtains. I hear a laugh come from behind me, but I ignore it. It's just Samolio and right now, he doesn't matter. I just need to get out of here.
The smoke is starting to fill my room instead of fresh air and I begin to cough.
I could always open my window and pop the screen out, trying to avoid my flaming curtains, but my room is on the top floor and I'd break something on my drop down. Plus, I saw a couple spiders between my window and the screen, the other day, and I'm terrified of spiders.
But it's either a couple broken bones and possibly touching a spider or dying a fiery death.
My coughing gets worse.
I look out my window and see my family standing in the front yard, looking confused and panicked. Krystal is on the phone and I assume she's calling the fire department. My dad starts looking at all the kids, mentally counting them. He starts looking around.
"Where's Dam?" he asks, looking more panicked.
"She isn't here?" Krystal says, looking just as panicked as Dad.
"She's still inside!" Dad says, the realization hitting him like a ton of bricks.
He bolts towards our front door. He's going to try to get me, but he won't be able to and he could get trapped in the process. I try to push my window open to stop him, but it doesn't move. It's locked. He's almost to the door.
"Dad, no!!" I scream, trying to stop him.
He looks up at my window, but comes inside, anyway. I try to unlock my window with a very shaky hand. After a few tries, my dad runs back out of the house, coughing from the smoke.
My head begins to spin, but I try to ignore it. One thought keeps running through my mind: I have to get out.
"Your screwed," Samolio laughs.
"Fuck off."
I finally get the lock to open and quickly push the window open.
