Protected (Gally, The Maze Runner)

Six

I woke up to yelling.

I hurried to climb down the tree and rush to the scene.

Of course, it's Minho, Newt, and Gally.

No one noticed me yet so I decided to wait so I could see what the problem was.

"What the shuck do you mean she never went to you?! She wasn't with me last night!" Minho said annoyed.

"Lying sack of klunk! I swear if you're taking advantage of-" that's when newt stepped in to stop Gally from launching at Min and I ran up.

"Gally! Stop!" I yelled, the three looked at me surprised, I stayed in the woods last night. I wasn't gonna make you jealous but I didn't want to see you either!" I told Gally.

"Hazel-"

"Stop it Gally, I've already heard enough. Minho, it's 6:34. can we go?" I asked.

Minho sympathetically nodded and Mewt gave me a look saying 'I'll talk to Gally'.

We ran to get a pack then went into the maze in an uncomfortable silence. What Gally said back there was weird to think about because Minho is like a brother to me.

Gally's POV

"What the shuck has gotten into you two?" Newt asked me as we went to get breakfast.

"Can you mind your own business?" I snapped.

"No, I'm in this now too. Hazel may be stubborn but she's like my sister and I will not have her worrying about you while she runs in the maze everyday. Shell get distracted." he has a point but I don't know what to do anymore.

"She's just been so different. I didn't know she'd become a runner or start to hate me because I care." I sighed and stopped walking. I can't let anyone see me weak. I'll make a fool of myself.

"Gally, We're all scared. we've grown fond of that egghead but she's still a part of the glade, girl or not. She's gonna help out the way she can." Newt cares for her too but in a brotherly way. I know that.

"I just wish she could've chosen medjack or something. Why the shucking maze?!" I kicked the structure we're currently building.

"She's a girl, she'll do what she wants." He chuckled, "And Minho, that boy doesn't see her like that. He knows his boundaries Gally. Keep that in mind next time you accuse him of shucking your girlfriend." And with that newt walked away.

"She's not my girlfriend!" I called.

"Then don't get mad when she moves on." Newt called and caused me to clench my fists.

"Minho!" I growled as I paced back and forth in front of the doors.

They haven't come back yet and the doors close in less than five minutes.

"Gal, they'll be fine." Frypan muttered. He's just as worried as me but he doesn't show it.

"You see that?" A shuck pointed into the maze.

It's them thankfully but Hazel has a twisted ankle.

This made my anger grow.Once they were out I grabbed Minho by his shirt and slammed him into the wall, "You shank! What the hell happened to watching her?!" I screamed.

"Gally!" Hazel yelled but I ignored it.

"Five shucking minutes! You only had five minutes!" My grip tightened on his shirt.

"Gally, she just tripped-" he starts.

"She hardly made it back you slinthead!" I pushed him against the wall again then Alby ran up and pried me off of him.

"This is not how we settle things!" Alby got in my face, "After all, he got her back! Now take her to the medjacks to get checked out."

I scoffed then walked over to Hazel and tried to help her but she didn't let go of Frypan, "Hazel, go with Gally!" Alby said annoyed.

She finally let go and I wrapped my arm around her waist.

The whole walk to the hut was quiet and uncomfortable.

"I was just scared.." I whispered.

"I know." she quickly said.

"I'm sorry," I started.

"I know." she repeated, "I overreacted a bit and I know that but you did too."

I nodded, she struggled to walk so I used my other hand to reach under her leg and pick her up.

"Gally," she smiled a bit, "I can walk."

Seeing her smile made me happy, "I know but I like this better."

She just shook her head and laughed.

Once we got to the Clint and Jeff, I say her down and waited for their diagnosis or whatever.

"Just a sprain. No running until the swelling goes down which may be a week. Just stay off of it and keep it propped up." they told her.

"How am I supposed to get around the glade if I can't walk on it?" Hazel asked. The guys just looked at me and we all laughed.

"I guess I'm the crutch?"

"I guess so." Hazel held her hands out like she was 3 asking to be held.

I picked her up again and smiled down at her, "Can I ask you something?"

Hazel nodded as I walked us over to my hut.

"Don't hate me for this but did you ever have feelings for Minho?" I dreaded this answer.

"Gally, I don't want to be with Min. I only wanna be with you. He's my best friend and he's been here for me but I l-love you."

I stopped in my tracks and looked at her, "You don't mean that greenie.." She deserves someone better than me to love, someone like Minho.

"Gally, I do. I don't care if you don't feel the same but I just know you are all I think about when I'm running and when I sleep and the first thing on my mind when I wake up. I love you."

I put her carefully on the ground and looked down at her, her green eyes and her long brown hair. Everything about this girl is perfect.

"I love you too Egghead, and I feel like a shank because you deserve better. Before you, I only cared for myself and I thought I was never gonna enjoy this place but now, knowing I get to wake up and see you, it's different. I'm sorry I'm not perfect but I do love you." I couldn't keep eye contact with her because I didn't want to let her see how weak I am.

"Gally, you're perfect to me." her small hands cupped my face and she reached up to kiss me. Its been too long since we've done this and it's the best feeling ever.

We pulled away when we heard the whistles of the gladers and on particular comment stuck out to me, "Make her yours." That shucking British accent.

"Hazelnut, will you be my girlfriend?" I whispered in her ear so the guys didn't hear.

She smiled and nodded then kissed my cheek, "I love you." she whispered.

"I love you too.."
