Severus sat at the desk in his study, anxiously tapping his foot as he reflected on the bomb Laura had dropped on him.
"You're... what?" Severus asked, practically praying to a god he didn't believe in that he had misheard her.
"I'm pregnant," Laura whispered. "I understand if you need some time to process this."
Severus had looked at her in surprise.
She wasn't angry.
She wasn't mad.
She wanted to give him time.
And Severus needed time to figure out what to do. "I just want to process this," he had said quietly, taking Laura back to their home, making sure she was safe and comfortable in their room before he retreated to his study on the first floor, settling into his chair.
Because all he felt was panic and disbelief.
This couldn't have happened at a worse time... just as a war was beginning... just as death and violence were beginning to ravage their lands... and Laura and Severus were in the middle of it all.
The performers, the puppets in a much larger game... and now, they might have brought another life into the madness.
Severus snapped out of his thoughts, staring down at his desk. He reflected on what Laura had said.
She was pregnant.
Severus sighed lightly, trying to figure out how this happened.
Well, he knew how it happened, but they had been careful. So, so careful. He leaned back in his chair, closing his eyes. He thought back to how stressed he'd been, juggling his lies, his deceit, his duplicity. His mind drifted to when he was making Laura's birth control potion and he wondered if he'd lacked focus because of his stress. Maybe he screwed up the potion.
Or, perhaps, this was merely fate, throwing a wrench in an already complicated situation.
But there was so much doubt masking any hope he wanted to find.
Would he be a good father? Or was he destined to repeat the mistakes his own father had made?
Severus took a deep breath, knowing that at least for now, he could provide comfort and support to his wife, even if he didn't know what he wanted the outcome of this situation to be.
He got up from his desk and left the study, climbing the stairs to the bedroom. He found Laura sitting on the bed, a look of worry etched on her face.
"Feel like talking?" he asked softly.
Laura looked up at him and nodded. "I think it would be a good idea," Laura said quietly.
Severus nodded, sitting down next to her.
They sat in silence for a while, neither of them having any idea as to what to say.
"How are you feeling?" Severus asked, breaking the silence.
Laura shrugged. "Tired," she said quietly.
"How long have you known?" Severus eventually asked, breaking the silence.
"About a week," she said quietly. "I'd been feeling off for a while, but I thought it was just stress."
"But it wasn't just stress," Severus said.
"No," Laura told him. "It wasn't. The doctor said it's about two months along. I can't believe I had no idea."
Severus watched her, seeing the dark circles under her eyes. Part of him wanted to be angry; angry at Laura for not telling him sooner, but seeing the look on her face...
