Ascension (Of the Shadowhunter kind)

Simon was confused. Very confused, in fact, which wasn't good because in about half an hour he was due to go infront of the Council to drink from the Mortal Cup.

But there was a name that had been floating around his head for a while, and the only one who could tell him what it meant was nowhere to be seen.

To be fair, the feeling of confusion wasn't exactly new to him; recently a load of weird stuff had happened. First of all he'd been introduced (reintroduced?) to this whole new layer- the Shadow world- and then he'd get these random memories from time to time that would nearly always make no sense, because that wouldn't be fun at all.

So, no, the confusion wasn't what was bothering him.

He could tell, somehow, that the name floating in his head should not be said in the presence of Clary or Jace and especially not Alec. Magnus probably wouldn't understand, or if he did he'd just laugh and call him the wrong name (of all the things, Simon remembered that. Typical).

He really wanted to speak to Isabelle about it, but he had no idea where she was for starters, and generally she didn't want to talk about his lack of memories, as if he could help it (actually he probably could have if he hadn't offered them up, but still).

All he wanted was to find out who this 'Lord Montgomery' was.

Simon was very confused. He remembered a lot more about Izzy than he had told her- the look in her eyes always stopped him. Simon remembered a dark cave in a demon realm, snow outside the New York Institute and a pair of red velvet gloves, a party in a loft which he seemed to remember as him being turned into a rodent, though he wasn't quite sure.

Whatever he knew about Izzy, he knew what he felt for her. And dear goodness, he got the impression that if Isabelle felt the same way at all, she was suppressing it deep down inside her.

And then there was the chance that he wouldn't survive drinking from the Cup.

He knew the risks, had been told so the second Magnus had started to unwravel the truths and untruths apart. But, yeah, he could die. And Simon knew that if it was gonna end that way, he wanted to be holding Izzy's hand.

He could see her now, padding down the stairs in search for her shoes. He started towards her, almost hindered by how slow each movement felt, a temporary effect of his reversal. He was meant to get used to it, but it felt like wading through syrup at times.

He felt so... mundane.

"Izzy," he called, stopping in front of her. "I just wanted-"

"You should be there, Simon. You're gonna be late." She didn't look up at him, her black hair covering her face, but her voice sounded unlike the Izzy he knew; soft, shy.

Simon reached out a hand to her arm. "Iz." Under the touch of his hand- warm- she looked up at last, her eyes slightly red.

"Simon." Izzy tried to hold his gaze, but sniffed and buried her head in the crook of his neck, clinging to him. "Simon," she whispered. "You could die, I don't-"

"I'm not going to die. I don't want to face your wrath if I did." She half-laughed. "Also because I have questions for you. I remembered something, but I don't-"

"Hey lovebirds! Do you want to make it to the ceremony or not?" Jace called from outside.

Izzy's head snapped up and she glowerwd. "I'll kill him, don't worry. After this of course, it's your special day."

Simon grinned. "Thanks."

~lazy flashforward~

Even moving felt different. Every step that Simon took was faster, he could see more clearly, he felt so alive, so real.

The rune he'd received on the back of his right hand glimmered darkly under the lights in the ballroom at the Institute.

There was music playing, Clary had obviously remembered his favourite songs and put them together because he loved the music, the others seemed to like them, but the adults didn't. Strange.

Simon was dancing with Isabelle and he never wanted to stop.

Izzy tucked a strand of hair behind her ear. "So... you remembered something?"

Simon cleared his throat. "Ah, yes. Who's Lord Montgomery, and why do I have the feeling I should never mention him to Alec?"

Izzy froze, then started laughing. "Oh, Simon. I'll tell you sometime... when there aren't all these people around. " She winked at him.
