Common Sense

Uzumaki Naruto stared at the strange black-haired boy standing behind him. The umbrella over his head was yellow, which did not match the blue of the stranger's clothes. "Wh-Who are you?" He asked tentatively, sniffing and wiping his eyes and nose.

The boy frowned, the concerned look still on his face. "Sorry, I don't believe in telling my name before the asker tells me his. And you haven't answered my question."

Naruto then noticed that the boy's voice was a bit raspy, as if he had not spoken in a long time. "I-I'm Uzumaki Naruto," he said hesitantly. "I-I w-w-was being bullied, s-so I ran away f-from my home and school."

The boy's eyebrows rose and he crouched down to match Naruto at eye level. He then smiled softly, which surprised Naruto greatly. "I'm Uchiha Sasuke. But before we talk more, don't you think we should move out of the rain?" He asked, gesturing to Naruto's shivering.

The place where Kiba had thrown the rock throbbed slightly as Naruto glanced at him a bit fearfully, but then relaxed since this Sasuke person hadn't said anything about his hair.
Yet.

He nodded gratefully. "Th-th-thank you..." he said quietly as the other helped him up off the muddy ground.

Sasuke pointed ahead. "My house is over there," he said. "Come on. You can dry off there."

For some strange reason, Naruto felt as if he had heard the Uchiha name before. He just could not remember where.

-

Sasuke tossed a small piece of wood into his fireplace and moved a cushioned seat closer to heat for Naruto. "Here," he said. "You can sit here."

Naruto nodded gratefully and then sat in the seat. He held out his hands, warming the numb cold fingers.

Sasuke wrapped a warm fluffy towel around the blonde's shoulders and nodded in response as he dipped his head for thanks. He didn't know this Naruto boy; he didn't even remember him back in the daycare, so perhaps this Naruto had moved into Konoha recently.

Sasuke shuffled inside his drawers for something for him to wear, looking for slightly smaller clothing since Naruto's frame was a bit smaller than Sasuke's. He finally settled on a long-sleeved T-shirt and sweatpants that could be adjusted and placed it on Naruto's lap. "You can change into these," Sasuke said.

Naruto looked at the clothes and then to Sasuke, and then back to the clothes. "Thank you," he murmured softly as he stood and gently placed the towel on the chair. He then began to unzip his jacket and slipped off his shirt.

Sasuke's cheeks flushed at the sight of the blonde in front of him and he immediately turned around. "I-if you want, there's a room for you to change in," he stammered.

Naruto frowned in confusion. Why had Sasuke turned away? The two of them were male, so why was he flustered? "I'll be fast," he said, quickly putting on the pants and shirt. He gathered up his wet clothes in his arms and settled back into the chair.

Once the sound of shuffling had decreased, Sasuke turned around. "I'll wash your clothes, if you want," he said.

Naruto hesitantly handed them to him. "Th-thank you," he said again.

That's when he noticed.

A slight blush was painted over the taller boy's cheeks and he was struggling not to look away.

Why? Naruto was puzzled, but did not decide to press on the matter. He then wondered, why was someone like Sasuke helping someone like him? A boy with golden hair like his did not belong with the Konohans and he had never seen anyone else with blonde locks. Therefore, he must not belong anywhere. He winced slightly as his head began to hurt once more.

"Why are you helping me?" The words slipped out before Naruto could help it.

Sasuke frowned, trying to process what he had said. "Why? Isn't it common sense to help someone when they're suffering?" He was confused. Why had Naruto said this? Without waiting for an answer, the question he asked being rhetorical, Sasuke went to go out the other male's clothes inside the washer.

What?

Common sense?

Naruto frowned as he stared at the tongues of fire warming his body. If the Konohans had common sense, they would have helped him from the moment he was born.

Unfortunately, they lacked such a thing.

Sasuke sat in a chair across from Naruto. "Do you...want to talk?" He asked tentatively.

Naruto looked up questioningly. "What?"

"I mean, if you need something to talk to you, I'm always here...or something..." Sasuke looked away, blushing.

Naruto stared at his eyes, the black of them making him slightly lightheaded.

What?

Lightheaded?

The pain in his head increased with each second and before Naruto knew it, he passed out.
