Thewaves from the ocean bashed back and forth on the sides of the ship.
Varuslay in a hammock inside a small room. A black coat covered his faceso that no one would see the toll that the pit had taken on him.
Hewondered where he would go first after reaching the mainland. Hisfirst priority would have to be finding somewhere to find somewheresafe to hide first.
Therewas loud banging above deck and some mumbling outside the door.'Where'sthe treasure?' One of the voices asked aggressively.
'Thereis none.' The other voice replied in a scared tone.
Therewas the sound of a sudden loud punch and cry of pain.
Thiswas all it took to snap Varus into action.Heflung himself out of the hammock and flicked his hood off.
Theroom was briefly illuminated by the flickering light of purple andblack flames.Varus'bow materialized in his hand, but he waited.
'Ifyou don't tell me where the damn treasure is slice your gullet!' Thevoice shouted.
'Pleasedon't! there is none a swear!'Varuscould hear the sound of steel being unsheathed.
Hewasted no time bashing the door open end jumping out.Theman who had been holding dagger in his hand was completely shockedand didn't know how to react to the archer bursting out from the doornext to him, nor did he have time to react to Varus firing an arrowstraight into his skull.
'What'sgoing on?' Varus asked the crewman who was still cowering on thefloor.
'P-p-pirates...'The man said trembling 'Were under attack by pirates.''Whydidn't we hear their ship? Why did no one sound an alarm?'
'Theman in the crows nest... he was one of them. By the time we saw themit was to late.'Varuswas more than a little bit mad. He really didn't want a fight but itlooked like he had no choice.
'Staybellow deck!' He shouted as he ran for the door to the deck.
Thedeck was crowded by sailors and pirates fighting.
Thepirates were at a huge advantage, they wielded scimitar's and thecrew were left fighting with mops and pathetic excuses for weapons.Onepirate made a quick charge at Varus but was caught short when Varusfired an arrow into the center of his chest.
Thepirates continued to board the cargo ship from their own which wasparallel, connected by ropes and wooden planks.
Doingthe best he could to protect the crew, Varus fired arrow after arroweach finding their mark.
Bodieshit the deck all around him. Blood was tossed around from thecrashing waves, it drenched the deck and squelched under foot as thecrew of both ships battled fiercely.
Finallythe night turned silent.
Varusgazed through the smoke and gun powder and saw men crawling acrossthe wooden planks of the deck with missing limbs or wounds so badthat they would soon bleed out.
Oneman managed to grab the uninjured Varus' ankle and look up at him.'S-saveme.' He begged trying to hold back the blood falling from his mouth.
Therewas no saving him. A gash across his sides showed that he would livefor a while yet but in excruciating pain. Knowing this Varus showedthe man the only kindness he could and with a swift draw back of hisbow, followed by a faint purple glow and the brief noise of an arrowcutting through the air, Varus ended the man's pain.Thesilence didn't last long however.
Aloud horn bellowed through the quiet and a lone man swung from thepirate ship on a rope the cargo ship. He was definitely anotherpirate, but he looked completely different to the others. He wassurprisingly old, but none the less he looked more capable offighting than the other pirates.
'Prepareto be boarded!' He shouted as he slammed down onto the deck.
'Whothe hell are you?!' Varus demanded, bow drawn.
'Iam Gangplank, and I am the captain of these pirates! And who mightyou be?'
