It was getting late; Layella could tell, not because of a clock, or because the light of day was fading, but because she couldn't stop yawning. She was exhausted from the day's activities, and was looking forward to the night, when she could rest. However, when she heard a deafening roar through the house, she knew that it would be a long time yet.
Buzz and Woody both yelled "Get into position!", then froze and glanced at Terry and Layella, both shocked and somewhat startled. Buzz leaned closer to Woody and started talking quietly, so that Layella could only catch parts of their whispered sentences.
"She's young, but....notice....not her toys"
".....She'll wonder....came from?"
"I think...."
"What....do?"
They both turned to the teens and, once again in unison, spoke:
"Hide under the bed!"
"Hide in the closet!"
Then Buzz turned to Woody, a disgruntled expression beginning to furrow his brow. "Are you crazy? If they hide under the bed, they'll be spotted faster than an alien on Earth! Bonnie looks for stuff under there all the time!"
Woody looked consternated. "Buzz, the reason there's so much stuff under her bed is because forgets things are even under there. Its like its not even there! But she does sometimes get clothes out of her closet; they'll be discovered if they hide in there."
Buzz was ready to counter. "There's stuff in the closet they could hide behind, if she even goes over there in the first place!"
Woody had his mouth open, ready to contradict Buzz's statement, but just then, Dolly appeared over the edge of the bed and pulled Layella and Terry down--face-first, Layella felt--into the toy box. She could only hear the cowboy's and space ranger's footsteps as they retreated to their original positions, before Bonnie even left. The noise like thunder grew more and more as Bonnie pounded her way through the house, and to her bedroom. She slammed the door open and rushed in, immediately grabbing Woody, and heading for Buzz. After she snatched Buzz in her grasp, cradled there with Woody, she headed for the toybox. Layella saw the light and felt a rush of cool air as the lid was swung open, and for a moment she thought she was going to be chosen and pulled from the toybox, until she noticed that Dolly had been the only one pulled from the crate. The lid was closed, and all fell calm as she heard Bonnie's giggles outside, making little voices for her toys, accents and all. It was pleasant to hear how joyous Bonnie's beloved toys made her, and for a moment Layella was saddened. She was suddenly extremely aware of how quickly time was passing; it had felt like just yesterday she was a toddler, carefree and high-spirited. Now here she was, in her teenage years already, her only companions being her brother and some caring toys they had been fortunate enough to stumble upon... Only my life... Layella thought, with a sense of spirit. Then Layella frowned. That same spark inside of her, that old rambunctiousness dissolved quickly in that moment, as realization hit her hard; there was a possibility she was never going to leave this strange realm, a possibility she was never going to be able to see her family again, the family she missed so much.... she shook her head, clearing the horrid thoughts eating at her brain. She'd only have to work harder to make sure she did see them again. She heard a whisper, from whom she did not know, asking if she was okay, and she realized that she was trembling. She was also on the verge of shedding a tear, and she had to focus on sounds from outside of the toybox to calm herself down. But wait... there was no sound? Layella focused harder in case Bonnie was whispering. Surely it wasn't late enough for Bonnie to have fallen asleep already? The lid to the toybox was flung open, and a small voice, hardly more than a breath, spoke, "Okay, all's safe! Time to come out now!"
Layella climbed out of the crate, with the assistance of a few other toys, and sat on the very end of the bed.
Woody poked her shoulder. "Come down here so we can talk." He then slid over the edge of the bed.
Layella followed, with Terry close behind, and slid down to the ground. Woody was standing there, preparing to speak; he seemed perfectly calm and collected, but as Layella landed, she immediately grabbed her right foot. "Ow, ow, ouch!" She winced as pain seared through both of her feet and legs, sending a dull ache into her stomach. For some unknown reason Layella hadn't expected the drop to be painful, nor was she prepared for the utterly dumbfounded look Woody would give her. She was acutely aware of Terry also gasping in pain as he dropped down beside her. That's gonna leave a mark... "So then... where are we sleeping?"
"Actually, I had another idea... how about you come on the night patrol with us?"
"Er... night patrol?" Terry questioned.
"Every night, we go and check the Quadruple D. I figured maybe you'd want to go with us, just in case some of your friends show up or something?"
"Oh, uhhh... okay, I don't see why not..." Layella was hesitant. She couldn't help but to be a bit suspicious as to why he really wanted them to go with them... she was curious about the reason he had for it, for it seemed a little... odd. As if he had no logical backup for his reason. What if he pushes us back through the door then barricades it? ...Nah, highly unlikely... Yet she still worried, and as she was following behind Buzz, Woody and Terry, she almost told Woody to forget about it. But, she couldn't get herself to. She followed along quietly. I do wonder what's about to happen, though...
A/N Sorry for the abnormally short and uneventful chapter, I've been feeling... just ugh lately. Hope you were able to enjoy it anyway, though!! ~Dustpaw.
