Nights inside the Aggarwal haveli were heavy. The walls were thick, the corridors dark, and silence was broken only by the occasional footsteps of guards patrolling outside. But for Sanyukta, that night was different. She sat near the jharokha, staring at the moonlight spilling over the sand dunes, her mind tangled.
Her thoughts returned again and again to Randhir—the doctor who refused to be broken.
"Ye doctor alag hai. Na apna fayda dekhda, na apni jaan ki sochda... sirf dusre ki madad kare ja se. Aise log abhi bache bhi hain duniya mein?"
Annoyed at herself, she shook her head. "Sanyukta, tu pagal ho rahi se kya? Ye choraya tera dushman se, mehman na!"
And yet, the next morning, she found herself walking towards the garden where Randhir sat quietly, sipping water from a steel glass. He looked... calm, as though the chaos of the haveli couldn't touch him.
S: "Doctor, raat ko acchi neend aayi thi?"
Randhir looked up, surprised she was asking.
R: "Thodi der ke liye... phir apke pita ji ki fikr se uth gaya. Lekin ab unki tabiyat behtar hai."
Her lips curved faintly.
S: "Tu ajeeb sa hai, doctor. Itne bure haal mein bhi bas dusron ki sochta rahe se."
Randhir's smile was gentle, not defensive, not nervous—just warm. For reasons she couldn't understand, Sanyukta turned her face away quickly, irritated at herself.
Later that day, while Randhir gave medicines, Kishore opened his eyes slightly and murmured weakly. The entire family gathered, sighs of relief filling the air. Randhir checked his pulse and nodded.
R: "Ab khatra kam ho gaya hai. Kuch din aur dawa aur aram, phir theek ho jaenge."
The brothers cheered loudly, even patting Randhir's back a little too roughly. Randhir only managed a polite smile, his eyes flicking toward Sanyukta—who, for once, looked relieved in silence.
