We have been waiting at the airport for the next plane for an hour and Abby was still a bit upset.
I couldn’t stop thinking about what happened and how upset she looked when we left. It broke my heart to not be able to make her feel better.
“I’m hungry” She said out of nowhere.
I realized we didn’t eat at the restaurant because everything that went on at the restaurant.
“I have money, what do you want?” I asked looking around at the mini restaurants in front of me.
“Uh Arby’s” She said.
I got up and looked down at her, “What do you want?”
“I’ll just come with.” She said.
We got up and walked over to Arby’s. We got in line and I noticed she started getting fidgety. When we finally got up to the counter she ordered the number 2 with a sprite and curly fries. I wasn’t too hungry so I just ordered a small fry.
We went back over to where we were sitting before and started eating. I was looking around at the people when Abby spoke up.
“Hey Alexis..” She murmured.
“Yeah?” I answered looking at her.
“Thank you for being here for me.” She said.
I got a good look at Abby and I saw sadness written all over her face, but I saw a bit of love in her eyes. She looked like she wanted to smile but she couldn’t for some reason and it killed me.
“I’m sorry I walked away from them, Abby.” I said looking down at my hands.
“It’s okay Alexis, you did what was best.” She answered grabbing my hands and pulling me in for a hug.
I had my eyes closed while I was hugging her because I was so scared tears where going to fall, but when I opened my eyes I saw something I did not want to see. Jack and Finn walking, more like running, towards Abby and I.
~
Jack POV
“They have to be here somewhere.” I said looking around the airport.
After the girls drove off I walked back in the restaurant and sat down thinking how we messed up.
“We were flirting with them, Jack.” Finn stated sitting down. I looked up at him and he looked upset.
“What are we going to do?” I asked.
“Go get them back.” He said and I nodded my head.
We were almost out of the door when that same girl that gave us her number walked up to us.
“Hey so I saw your friends leave and I was wondering if you want to go to the beach with us?”
I looked at Finn and Finn looked at me.
“No” we said at the same time and walked past her to the four wheeler.
And that is how we ended up here.
“Jack, there they are!” Finn said pointing to Abby and Alexis hugging on a bench against a wall.
We started towards them and then I saw Alexis’s eyes open and angry fill them. She shot right up with Abby in hand and started walking towards another door that read ‘EXIT’ on it.
“Wait!” I yelled and Abby turned around and stopped in her tracks. Alexis turned around and looked at Abby then at us. She looked furious and took her place in front of Abby like she was her body guard.
When we finally got to them we had to catch our breath. I looked at Alexis and anger was spread across her face but her eyes read sadness. Pure sadness. I couldn’t see Abby but I knew Finn could because of the look on his face.
When we saw her face before I felt my stomach drop, she was so broken and I knew Finn was upset also about this all.
“Can we please talk?” He said to Abby but instead Alexis answered, “No, you have caused enough pain for today.” Her words were like venom and Finn was the first one poisoned by her words. He looked taken aback by her words and truthfully I was taken aback by them also.
“Please?” He asked and I saw Alexis about to say something back when Abby said “Yeah Finn, we can talk.” Alexis spun around and looked at her and searched her face. She let Abby by and watched her go with Finn.
When she finally realized I was still here she walked past me to where she was sitting before. I walked behind her and sat down next to her.
We sat in silence for a while and in that time I saw the little things she did.
She played with her hair, pulling at the split ends, fidgeted her feet around, played with her hands, bit her lip, and did this one thing that made me question something, she was make little lines on her thighs over and over again. Sometimes pressing harder in one place and lighting pressing down on another place. It was strange, like she was trying to cut herself or something.
Then it clicked, why she didn’t want to go to the beach, why she never wore shorts, why she always look a bit lost sometimes, why she was trying to “cut” her thigh.
She cut and didn’t want us to know she did, maybe.
I was about to say something when she shot up and started walking away. When I looked up I saw her mom walking towards us. She walked right in her mom’s arms. I saw her mouth “It’s okay, it will be okay.” I was about to get up and walk over to them but then I saw her mom shoot me a look that said ‘Move and you will die.’ So I stayed where I was. I saw Abby and Finn walking back and Abby run over to Alexis and her mom. Abby, Alexis, and her mom were all talking when Finn walked back over to me.
“So what happened?” I asked,
“I apologized and she accepted it, we are going out tonight and she is going to try to get Alexis to come along.” He said smiling at me a bit, “But there is something you need to know about Alexis,” I looked at him and I knew I wasn’t going to like it, “turns out she used to cut and that is why she did not want to go to the beach because she didn’t want us to know,” I knew it, and that fact that I did killed me a bit. “Also, she is a very sad person Jack. She doesn’t like who she is and all of this stuff that just went down is not going to make it any better.” He said and I felt my heart break. Why would she not like who she is? Why would she cut? I don’t understand. I had my head down when I heard a voice calling me over, I looked up to see Charlene standing there with her hand on her hip and Abby by her side. Alexis was gone and nowhere to be seen but Finn and I looked at each other and we both went to her.
“Yes Miss Buck?” I asked.
“How dare you hurt my daughter, Jack, and you Finn, how dare you hurt Abby. She is also like my daughter. How could you boys do this to them?” She spat.
“We didn’t mean to Miss Buck.” Finn answered looking down.
“Abby said you didn’t mean to but part of me doesn’t believe that. You were upset because they did not want to go to the beach so you went and flirted with other girls. That is not the answer boys.” She spat.
“We know.” Finn said to her.
“You boys should be lucky I am even letting you see them. Finn I know you are taking Abby out tonight but I would like if you waited till tomorrow night.” She said.
Finn nodded his head.
“Mom?” I heard Alexis say and we looked over to see her coming towards us, “What’s going on?”
“Nothing hon, why don’t we get to the plane, okay?”
I saw her nod and walk off, but before she went outside to the airplane I saw her look back at me, then she disappeared outside. Abby was still with Charlene and she looked hopeful for some reason.
“Now Jack, my daughter likes you a lot and if you like her I suggest you don’t give up.” And she walked off.
Abby was the only one standing there and she said “Come by the room tomorrow night at 7, you better look really nice!” She said and ran off.
