Chapter 83: I Lied
Do you ever really know the day you're going to die?
The day your life will change?
The day you discover the truth?
It could be today.
Tomorrow. Forty years from now.
The thought sent chills through my spine. How life can throw a major curve ball in the blink of an eye.
There was an eerie silence in our clearing. You could still hear the sounds of birds in the forest and some scuttling around of small animals.
But we humans were dead silent.
T J
She said TJ.
Like touche, pj, tee jay.
I don't know.
"What was that?" Austin asked, looking around at us, "Does that mean anything to you?"
I shook my head.
The blackmailer went by TJ.
That's big news. The biggest news we had. Why didn't it feel so big?
We had his name.
Luke exhaled and stood up to his full height.
She cowered up at him, waiting for him to release her.
"Take her in," Luke told Austin.
Austin jumped up from his crouched position, happy to oblige.
"Wait, wait, WAIT!" she yelled out, "You promised you let me go if I told you."
Luke pulled out the phone he'd stolen from the other intruder, and I was sure he was searching the chats for a TJ.
Luke replied coldly, scrolling, "You broke into my house, attacked my girlfriend and my sister. No chance you're going anywhere."
"You lied!" she tugged and twisted, but Austin held her arms down against her sides, dragging her up.
"Yeah," Luke nodded, "I'm not a good guy. But you're worse. Be grateful you're not a man."
His threat hung in the air.
Be grateful you're not a man, or I wouldn't be holding back.
"You really need to think your choices through," Austin grabbed her, taking her back towards the house, "You should've left when you could. Instead, you got greedy and violent."
I looked at the red truck, full of our stolen stuff.
I guess she thought she could get away with it all.
"How else was I going to get home? We're in the middle of the wilderness. It would take me years through the forest," she complained, "I didn't mean to hurt him."
"Oh, you just stumbled into their house and became accidentally savage?" Austin remarked, dragging her off.
I looked down at the golf club on the grass and then towards Luke.
He lowered the phone. Now that she was gone and the danger had faded, he let his pain shine through. The blow had driven him slowly to one knee.
Luke lowered his fist to the ground and exhaled, his eyes closing in hurt.
