Rain poured from the sky. It was chilling, yet oddly comforting. Everything seemed so quiet, time felt as if it had slowed down. The darkness loomed around me, covering me, giving me protection in the shadows. Nothing moved apart from the grass in the midnight wind and the splashes of water as rain drops came face to face with the stone ground. I had a feeling of anger and determination in me, I needed to do what was right. I looked towards the lining of the woods behind me, it looked so much more comforting than being out here, beside the huge walls to the kingdom. There was a silent creaking as the draw bridge slowly dropped, soldiers readied their horses to pass through the now open entrance. They were tall dark figures in the night, the markings on their armor bringing uncomfortable memories in my mind. I climbed out of my burrow, slipped the dagger out of its sheath, and sprinted towards the draw bridge. The Knights were now in the kingdoms walls, allowing the drawbridge to slowly close behind them, I needed to act quickly. As I grew closer to the wall I swapped my dagger out for my bow, attaching a rope to the end of my arrow. I slipped the wire of my bow through my fingers, it felt smooth and familiar. I drew the bow and released it, the arrow shot through the air with the rope attached, it met the top of the wall and stuck into it comfortably. Without hesitation I grabbed the rope and climbed up the wall. The wall was huge and it was going to be a struggle to climb, but I was a kings knight, nothing was to hard for me. As I grew close to the top I heard voices, it sounded like guards having a conversation. I was still calm however, and this allowed me to plan out what to do. I drew out my dagger, and scraped it against the wall, "what was that?" One of the guards asked his fellow companion, "I don't know, stop being so paranoid" he replied with laughter. The guard walked towards the edge of the wall and leant over the edge, but I was prepared. I flung my dagger upwards into the guards neck, he did not make a sound, but simply slumped over the edge of the wall and fell. As he fell I reached out and grabbed the dagger from his falling body, flung myself over the top of the wall and threw it into the other guards chest. I stood there, collected myself, and carried on.
The walls spread out miles in all directions, covering the busy town inside it. I often looked at the walls as a form of protection, but now I realize it was only an excuse to trap so many innocent people inside. If I wanted to make it to the top, to the steps of the castle, I would need to stay silent and take things slow. As I ran down the cold damp alleyways of the town, I had the uncomfortable feeling that I fit in to well there, that I was just another dark evil looming in the shadows. But no, I had to remind myself of everything that had happened. How I was framed for the murder of the king by his loyal guard, how his son was now in charge and had sent me to my death, and how the most beautiful women I had ever met was his sister, the daughter of the old king. Although, the strangest thing of all, was how I had been reborn. My lifeless corpse, rejuvenated, given hope, but for why? I quickly regained control of my thoughts, there were voices nearby, more guards. I leant against the wall, held my breath, and waited. "He's dead, he died long ago, that traitor deserved everything that he got", these voices grew louder as two characters walked down the street beside me, passing the alleyway I hid in. I waited till the guards were a fair distance away, then started running up
to them from behind. They soon entered a courtyard, where they met two other guards, who were just as careless as themselves. I pulled the bow out from behind my back once again, took a water arrow from my sheath, and aimed it at the large fire pit in the middle of the courtyard. "Lights out" I whispered sarcastically as I let the arrow free, as soon as it met the fire it extinguished it and enclosed the area in complete darkness.Blood dripped from my hands, mutilated bodies lay around me. This feeling, it was dark, so dark. I couldn't help but feel as though everyone was right, that I was evil, a monster.
