The forest is thick and quiet, branches gnarl overhead, and the only sounds are boots crunching on twigs and the distant caw of crows.
Danny walks in front, rifle held ready. Lee follows beside him, eyes scanning the trees.
Danny: "See anything?"
Lee: "Not yet."
Danny: "I know it's around here. It's gotta be close."
They push past a cluster of bushes. Lee stops, kneels, and nudges an empty can of soup with the end of his rifle.
Lee: "Here..."
He stands and looks ahead. Past a few trees, a small clearing opens — a shabby, hastily set-up camp. A few crates. A tent. A small firepit, cold and dead.
Danny: "Oh, shit! You found it?!"
Lee raises a hand and gestures him forward more quietly. They move in slow, rifles up, stepping from tree to tree until they're close enough to see the entire camp.
Nobody.
Danny: (whispering) "You see anybody?"
Lee: (murmurs) "No... but keep your guard up."
They move closer, then take cover behind trees at the edge of the clearing, watching for movement. Nothing stirs.
Danny: "Camp's too quiet. Don't like it."
Lee: "Look, there's two of us, and one of whoever shows up. No matter what happens, one of us is gonna kill 'em."
Danny smirks a little at that, but his hands are steady on the gun.
Danny: "You talk like you've done this before."
Lee doesn't answer. Instead, he steps out first.
Lee: "Stay on your guard."
They enter the camp fully.
Danny: "Watch my back, Lee. I'm gonna check out the tent."
Danny moves forward, barrel first, and slowly peels back the flap of the tent. He aims inside, waits a second, then lowers his gun.
Danny: "Clear. This camp's too small. Can't be their main base."
Lee: "That's what I was thinking."
Danny: "Take a look around anyway. There's probably some shit here they stole from us."
Lee steps away toward a crate and a small makeshift table, eyes scanning. Empty cans. A half-burned log. Torn plastic.
Something catches his eye: a small handheld camcorder.
He picks it up.
Danny: "What'd you find?"
Lee: "A video camera."
Danny: "Lemme see that."
Danny walks over. Lee presses the "on" button — nothing.
Lee: "Battery's dead, though."
Danny: (a beat... then a bit too quick) "Oh. Good."
He retreats a step, shifting his rifle.
Danny: "What else they got over here? Let's grab anything useful and get the hell out. I see you handled that gun I lent ya pretty well. You a hunter?"
Lee: "No. But Lilly keeps us on a regular training schedule."
Danny: "Lilly, huh? Sounds like she's runnin' this 'democracy' of yours."
Lee doesn't bite. He moves toward the tent.
Danny stays near the firepit, scanning the treeline.
Danny: "We helped a small group once, y'know. Thought we were doin' 'em a favor out here."
