CHAPTER THREE: ALGEBRA
*Chase's POV
"I'm home." I said through the house. My voice echoing on every corner.
The house is empty. What a surprise.
I went to the kitchen and rumaged through the fridge to find something to eat. There was still a lot to chose from. I am the only one who eats here anyway.
For the past ten years, Dad still works late, sometimes until morning even. He's been promoted five times and is practically his boss' right hand.
Mom on the other hand, is still doing volunteer work together with her new found hobby, baking. She's established a bakery and gives her income to those who need it. She even gained the title "Town Saint" for all the charity work she's been doing, especially for the orphaned and disabled children.
But little did the town know, she barely had time to give for her own kid.
I walked upstairs, dragging my feet as I chewed some beef jerky I found in the fridge. I felt so tired of school. Who knew you could get tired of boredom? Our great algebra teacher, Ms. Wang, even gave us a ten page homework that is due tomorrow morning. No one would want to come home to a stack of homework.
Damn it, that's why she's single and alone in life.
I opened the door to my room, ready for a quick sleep before I start with my homework, when a small puffball came running over to me and tackled my legs.
"Hey boy." I said bending over to rub his head, "Did you miss me, Snacks?
I picked his small body off the ground, and he started licking my face all over. Well, I guess I'm not entirely alone.
This is Snacks by the way. He's a 26 month old poodle/yorkie mix an animal shelter gave to mom after she donated tons of bucks. Mom didn't want him at first, but she thought it could keep me company while she was out helping others. And how could she say no?
And it worked out. I never wanted a dog, but Snacks was an exception. He's a smart, playful fella ever since we got him at 8 months old. Mom said, he was rescued from a train station where he was left by his mother that was hit by a car not far from the station. A sad story really. But he recovered fast and was ready to be given to a forever home, or whatever they call it. Which was us.
I let myself fall on my bed as I closed my eyes. Snacks hopped on it, and layed right beside me. I was still chewing on a beef jerky, but sleep was pulling me to the edge. I yawned, and Snacks yawned too.
The next thing I knew, I was already enveloped in sleep's blankets.
***
I woke up to the sound of clattering, clicking, complaining and talking to herself. Someone was moving around my room, and wasn't doing such a quiet job doing so.
I rolled over and covered my head with a pillow.
"Johnson!" She said, walking over to my bed, "Great. You're awake."
