Michelle swept her daughter down a long hall, Redhead and Steelface right behind. (Brielle had nicknamed them that for she did not know their names.)
Michelle led Brielle into a dark room, and Redhead flipped on the light switch. A serious of wall lamps buzzed to life, casting a warm glow over the contents of the room. "Welcome to the library." Michelle opened her arms towards the mass of bookshelves before them.
"That's a lot of books," Brielle said.
Michelle nodded. "We keep all of our informational scrolls, dragon records, Morph sighting records, and spell books in here."
"Wait, what? Spell books? Morph sighting records?" Brielle sputtered.
Then Redhead spoke for the first time in front of Brielle, his green eyes fixing on her. "I think I should be telling you all this instead of Michelle," he grunted, rolling his eyes at her mother.
Michelle narrowed her eyes at the boy. "Thank you, Nicolas, for that very kind remark. But I do believe I can handle my own daughter myself."
Redhead, who's real name was Nicolas, rolled his eyes and trotted off down the hall, the hard-faced girl with perfectly straight hair following behind him.
Brielle watched them go, and then turned to her mom in a flurry. "Ok, first of all, who are they?"
Michelle laughed. "Ha! Oh, yes, the redhead boy is Nicolas, and Anna is my friend's daughter. They all are Morphlings, who work at the MU."
Brielle frowned. "What is a Morphling?"
Her mother sighed, and plopped down in a velvet armchair in the dimly lit library. "Right. Come, sit, dear. There is a lot of explaining to be done."
Brielle sat and listened to her mother speak.
"Long ago, a race of people called the Morph thrived on Earth. These people could shapeshift into a dragon, just like you. Unfortunately, the Morph thought they were superior to the Ordinaries, or the people without their powers. The Morph tried to enslave the Ordinaries, and take over the world. Thankfully, the Morphlings stepped up. A Morphling is a person who has one parent that is a Morph, and one that is an Ordinary. Morphlings have the same powers as the Morph. So, the Morphlings decided to set things straight, and using their magic and spellbooks, they created anther dimension where things could go in, but could not come out. A Morphling Princess by the name of Adeline Sky created this dimension, and locked the evil Morph inside. This other dimension, known as Vayldon, is where the Morph established their isolated kingdom where they could not harm the Ordinaries or Morphlings. Adeline Sky created a special gemstone that granted the power to transfer between the two worlds, known as the Morphling's Gem. Apparently, the wearer's powers would be strengthened, and their dragon form larger.
The original Morphlings banded together to form the Morphling Union, founded by none other than the Adeline Sky. Their job was to protect the Ordinaries and the Morphlings on Earth, and prevent the Morph from turning against each other within Vayldon.
Adeline Sky was feared by all Morph, until one day, the ancient Morph King Grimm killed her in battle. The Morphling's Gem was lost, still unknown in location by both the Morphling and Morph. Thankfully, the Morph don't have it, because if they did, dragons would be swarming the Earth right now. As long as it remains hidden, both worlds are safe."
Brielle stood awestruck for several moments. When she had finally collected her senses, she said, "that's not true, Mom. That's all one big fairy tale. Come on, let's go home. I'm hungry. I promise I won't complain about doing homework. Just let's go home!" She was yelling now. Brielle wanted so bad for it to be false. But deep down she knew it was true.
