I walked out of the art studio and into the hallway of the deserted school. It is a Sunday afternoon. People are probably at home having dinner right now. I on the other hand am doing an art project.

I pass through the long corridors and exit the building. I don't get halfway to my car before it starts to pour.

"Come on!" I yell.

I spent a good two hours on this painting and if I don't get it inside soon it will be ruined. I frantically rush to my car that is parked on the left side of the high school. I shove the painting on my backseat and enter the driver's side.

This storm is treacherous. There is a very heavy downpour and the parking lot is flooding already.

I start the car, but I don't drive away. Instead, I sit and watch every single raindrop that falls upon my car.

When I was little I used to run around in the pouring rain and catch individual raindrops on my tongue. My mother said I was crazy running around in a storm like that and I was going to catch a cold.

I never did like nice, sunny days. I like when it storms. The clouds cry so I don't have to.

After thinking for a while, I decided to drive home. I ordered take out since my father is away on a business trip and my sister is at college.

I pulled up to the dingy old Chinese restaurant and quickly paid for my food. I bid a short goodbye and was on my way.

The trip home seemed to take forever on this particular Sunday. I sped up a little on the back road so I would get there quicker.

When I pulled into the driveway, I noticed someone sitting on the front porch. Slowly, I got out of the car and walked up the short set of steps and onto the porch.

I was greeted by a familiar face when I arrived at the door.

"Hi Riley," my older brother, Andrew said.

"Hey. I didn't think I would see you today! Why are you here?"

"I need to use some of dad's tools for my truck."

"Ah, well if you need anything feel free to come get me."

"Actually," he quickly said,"do we have any food?"

"Yeah. There should be some leftover lasagna in the fridge from Thursday."

"Great. Heat some up for me."

"Andy I have homework to do," I started.

"Yeah but you can do that after you cook me some lasagna," he interrupted.

"Fine. Just don't get mud everywhere. I already cleaned the house."

He followed me inside the large house and into the kitchen. I pulled out two plates for us to share our meal.  I hate lasagna so there is no way I was going to eat any. I would stick with my Chinese.

"I missed you," I sadly stated. "I'm home alone most of the time because dad is always away and Brianna is at college."

"I'm sorry, but I can't visit you every day. I live almost two hours away."

"I know," I replied. "How is Kristen?"

I put his lasagna on one of the plates and waited for my answer.

"She's doing good. We're both good."

My brother and his fiancée Kristen are getting married next year. I haven't seen her in a while either. At least I get to see my brother once in a while.

I heard the microwave start to beep, signaling that is was done. I pulled out the hot plate and set it on the table to cool.

"So," he started, "what did you do today?"

"I had to go to the school to finish my art project. It started pouring as soon as I walked outside though. My picture could have gotten ruined."

"What do you have to do for your project?"

"We have to paint a picture of our favorite memories."

"What are you painting then?"

"I don't really want to say."

"Come on Ry," he urged.

"I can only tell you that it was my favorite thing ever, but it is now gone."

"Riley, tell me what it is!"

"No. You can figure it out yourself."

"Is it a person?" He asked.

"You know what it is," I sadly stated.

"Ry I'm sorry."

"It's okay. I'll go do my homework now."
I took my painting into the office to dry and went up to my room

I grab my Chinese and stroll to my room. I don't have as much homework as I told my brother, but I just need some alone time.

The thoughts and memories of my better life came flooding into my brain. You never know how much you love someone until you lose them.

Instead of feeling grief, I decide to call my best friend  Daniella.

She always knows how to cheer me up when I'm feeling down.

"Hello?" She says.

"Hi Dani," I respond.

"Riley, what's up?"

"Nothing, just doing a bit of homework. Did you do your math?"

"Yeah I just finished it actually. Do you want it?"

"That would be great," I respond. At least I know one person in the world cares about me.

She sends me the homework via text message and I start to write down the answers in my notebook. Usually I would be doing my own homework but in this state of mind, I really can't help myself.

"Thanks," I say and hang up.

I decide to go to bed early that night since I have to get up at six tomorrow morning for school.

My dad sends me a text message saying goodnight and that he loves me. I respond and shortly after, I am fast asleep.
